Latest count: 3,630 email messages

New postby temom on Mon Jul 23, 2012 4:14 pm

Something is definately amiss. I noticed today while trying to work at home that my email kept dinging. When I looked, it was downloading messages that had already been downloaded. I've tried deleting, but more keep coming. DH is home, but is napping. Anyone have any ideas? My email is through AT&T, and I use Outlook for me email.

I asked ds just now and he said right away, "She's being "email bombed". Apparently your email's been chosen by someone with an ax to grind or just chosen randomly by someone who's downloaded a program that does just what you're describing. It's some kind of nuisance software. He said, it'll stop and you just have to delete them all. He's heard of it and that's just his opinion.

Oh, Theresa. That sounds like a major pain in the butt. I'm sorry.

Here, just found this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_bomb

It could be a spammer so I would suggest that you protect your computer by changing your password to something very unique including punctuation marks & numbers. It was reported last week that over 400,000 email addresses & passwords from Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, AOL, ATT & some others were compromised. I changed my email on all of my stuff except this forum. Guess that I need to do that too.

So, how's it going, Theresa? Password changing is always good.

A couple of years ago my brother's computer went wild and resent his messages 200 times.. It was a fault in the computer, his expert repairman said, and not a virus or anything like that. Sometimes these things cannot be helped..

Theresa hasn't been on since she posted this. I'm curious now. Hope she didn't crash.

It apparently was a problem with Outlook 2010. It kept downloading messages that had already been downloaded, over and over again. I knew it wasn't a spammer, as it was legit emails, just emails that I had already received over the past year. Hubby figured it out, and was able to stop it just as we had gone over the 4,000 new messages count. Apparently outlook 2010 gets into a loop over sending and receiving and gets confused. So now I have a 30 minute delay in receiving messages. That could be troublesome for days I work at home, but I have a way around it. I can view emails on my Ipod, so if I have it ding when new emails come, I'll know right away.
What took forever was cleaning it up. Unfortunately I do not have the option to view unread emails, so I sorted the emails by sender, and tried to delete the ones I thought were duplicates. Again, troublesome because my peeps at work don't start new emails, but pull up an old one and use the reply button. So I may get an email with a message of work for January 24th, but will be work for today instead. But no matter, I cleaned it up, and as far as I know, I only deleted one email that I wanted to keep. It was impossible to go through the deleted items folder in search of it, so I just waved bye bye to it and emptied my trash can. I can get that quiche recipe again, I'm sure. :D

So now I'm back online. I'm happy to be done with that mess :D.
