Personal Sewing Challenge

New postby kaitlinnegan on Tue Feb 03, 2009 9:56 am

I thought I would get this started since Barb (Mom of Six) had the idea flexible challenge to keep us motivated after the stash challenge. I thought making this *really* flexible would be the best. The rules are..well..there are no rules! Or, you make your own. But here are some guidelines for posting:

1. Once you've decided on your personal sewing goal, please post it and change the subject line of that post to "Goal" - I will compile them all here in the first post. Some examples:
- Sew 50 yards from my stash by the end of March
- Sew 2 yards from stash for each yard I purchase
- Sew 5 yards each month
- Complete 1 project per week

You can choose to count yardage (stash or non-stash), number of projects, or whatever helps motivate you!

2. Keep track of your progress and post it here.

Now, I just have to decide what my goal should be. :) Numbers really help motivate me, so I think I will count yardage. My goal is simply going to be to sew more, rather than use up only stash. There are several things in my stash I am looking forward to sewing, but I wouldn't mind buying a few more fabrics either..

Enjoy, and happy sewing!

2/8/2009 - Edited to add: Here is the list so far of everyone's goals. This is just for reference/motivational purposes and not anything official - feel free to change your goals at any time. I've tried to abbreviate for easier reading, and have included a link to each "goals" post. Let me know if you would like something changed on this list. :)

I think I will count finished garments/ outfits
1. sew 2 dresses suitable for church. (I cut out one this weekend)
2. I want to make DGD 1st communion dress 9 This will be contingent on her mother's approval and the appropriate pattern.
3 make 2 casual tops
4. make 2 dressy blouses.
5. make one good fitting pair of pants for myself
6. make one pair of canvas chaps for myself. (the Golswing is calling)
7. make a prototype scrub uniform for iffy business venture.
8 make one purse to use with one of the dresses
9. make one Daisy Kingdom outfit for DGD
10.make Scrub top for friend.

I have fabric for#1,#2,#4,#5,#6,#7,#10 so that is stash.
I will need fabric for #3, #8,#9

I intend to try the marathon cutting days interspersed with marathon sewing days and sew for 15 min a day. .

First and foremost I will strive for quality in my sewing and strive to learn something new in couture ( spelling) sewing.
I have patterns for #1,#3,#4,#5,#7,#8 (Noriko), #9, #10

I like this idea, so here's my goals at this point, they may change:

1. Finish at least two of the walls on painting/decorating the sewing room and getting it put back together.
2. Figure out what I'm sewing for Wendy for an Easter outfit. I have several ideas, and I have this fabulous fabric that would look wonderful on her, but no plan yet.
3. Sew a shirt for a neighbor girl, that's a belated birthday present.
4. Just get something sewn, I've barely sewn anything in January, it's so sad.

Well, that's my list as of right now. I'm off to work on #1, at least a little bit today, and I'll try and post pictures of it's state right now.

After one of the stash challenges (I think last Christmas) I decided that I would sew 30 yards of fabric before any shopping trips, unless I needed something to complete a project started from stash. So the last bit, I think about 2.5 yards of the stash challenge was actually the first part of my personal challenge. Last year it took me from January - May to sew 30 yards & May to December to sew another 30+.

So I'm sticking with that plan. I'd also like to take my time & learn some new techniques or play with attachments for my machine.

Well... since I tend to bite off more than I can chew... I will start small...and practical.

Sewing Goals For Immediate Future (next 2-3 months)

1) Finish one pair jeans. (already cut and embroidered)
2) Finish 2 (or 3? I cant remember how many I cut out) workshirts - WITH shop name embroidered like the original one.
3) MAKE DGD that lovely serged baby quilt I saw in my head with eyelet ruffles in the seam on the top side and a ruffled border. (in assorted pink strips).

Thats enough to start.... :D

My plan is to finish projects that have been UFO's for too long. I also have fabric for projects that haven't been started yet. I need to get myself moving. Unfortunately they are all quilts so I have a long haul ahead of me.

I think I've decided - my goal is going to be 1 garment per week until March 1st - that's 3 weeks, so 3 garments. :)

Hopefully 1 of the 3 will be a well-fitting pair of pants..
