Rookie Mistake

New postby SmilieFace on Sat Oct 13, 2012 6:35 am

This had to go in the beginner forum because this is a mistake I haven't made since I started sewing. I took out fabric from my stash to make Butterick 5794, view C. I didn't have enough fabric, but I figured I'd just go back to JoAnns to get the remaining fabric (I only bought this fabric 2 weeks ago). I cut out the pieces for everything but the skirt and that's done. Well, I've now gone to two JoAnn Fabrics and haven't been able to find the fabric! It's a Sew Classic Stretch Knit Denim in a gray/silver color. Both stores have plenty of the fabric in black and in navy, but not grey. Suggestions, anyone? Is this dress going to have to go in the UFO pile? The only other thing I can think of is to take off the cowl and make the skirt and cowl in blue or black fabric. Downside is that the cost of all that fabric would be about as much as just getting a different knit and starting over.

I checked online and I can't even find Sew Classic Stretch Knit Denim on JoAnn.com -- in any color.

Can you just get enough fabric in a complementary color for the skirt and then make a flower from the scraps to pin on the bodice or use the skirt scraps to trim the cowell and sleeves with. You could color block the bodice or cowell. You could make an applique from the bodice scraps and sew it on the skirt. You have a wonderful design opportunity here. It sounds like the navy blue or black will work as a contrasting color to go with the bodice without having to buy all the yardage to start over again. May you have fun figuring out what to do. The pattern will look great on you.

If you still had your receipt and could post the UPC/item number, I would look at JoAnn's in Evansville and mail it to you. I don't have any suggestions regarding different ways to make it but would look for the fabric for you.

I could look at JoAnns here tomorrow and see if they have it.

The fabric Kaitlin posted was the fabric. I'm wondering if I got the grey/silver off the clearance rack because JoAnns only has that fabric in black and navy now.

Which means I'm back to my original question. Do I color block it some way (top in grey and bottom in black?) or do I start all over with the fabric Barb posted? I'm horrible about picking out fabrics sometimes!

Color block. Does the collar have a center seam? If it does, could you make it half black? Then make the skirt in black. You might just want to take a large scrap of fabric to Jo Ann's and put it against the black and the blue and decide. Sometimes grey has a blue cast to it and sometimes it leans more to black.

That would be easy to alter.
