Singer 9117 Sewing Machine

The JoAnn's store in the Memphis area does not repair sewing machines & most of the staff do not know how to use them. I would take your machine to a reputable sewing machine repair shop to get it up & running. It could be a timing issue which is an easy fix by someone who knows what they are doing.

Hi Dee,
Your sewing machine that you have, I have the same exact one. I bought it brand new when I was a fashion design student in 1992. I hope that helps. I haven't used it in the past 15 years and have forgotten how to thread the bobbin, thus, I'm on this board. Can you please help me with threading the bobbin? I've lost the owner's manual.

I've got a chance to purchase a 9117 for $65.00. I'd like to know what it cost new, or what it might be worth now? She is the sole owner and says it works just fine. She did say I may have to adjust the tension or address a tension issue. Makes me wonder if any one has heard of any issues w/ this machine. I also read the manual on line and saw it has a vacuum hose and wondered if they get brittle and/or crack w/ age? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I've not used a Singer in years and years but if someone told me I'd have to address tension issues I'd be suspect of the machine. If you go to the singer site it might have the info you are seeking.
Not sure if there are any sewing machine dealers locally but check them out for used machines. It is always good to buy from a dealer so you can have it repaired if needed, lessons if needed and a good resource if you have questions.
Don't know what you will be sewing but if you are going to be using heavy weight fabrics a mechanical machine would probably be for you. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Viking machines and if you can find an older model they are work horses. Those made before 1970 require oiling and are better than those that say they oil themselves. They do but if left idle for long periods the oil gums up and you need to clean and re-oil in order for it to run. The Viking site doesn't even list the older machines so you basically have to google them and ask questions. Another place to check for machines is ebay. I've bought 2 from there with good luck, just make sure you ask questions about the machine, do they run, what attachments do they come with etc, if they take returns etc.
BTW welcome Steph. My Dad taught me to sew and DH likes to tinker and has repaired several of my machines in addition to sitting down and making a few things that he wants-no clothing just little projects.
