Older than dirt Quiz

MEMORIES from a friend :

My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

I remember 19. Hard to remember if I really remember some of them or that I just have heard of them. Okay, older than dirt! Might depend on which part of the country you live in too.

If I count the ones I've been told about but don't quite remember, I get 21. ;)

I don't remember wash tub ringers, but I remember a lady who lived close to my grandmother using a ringer washing machine on her back porch. We have the one that DH's grandmother used. He's planning to turn it into a planter for the porch on his workshop. I also have an old scrub board that DH's grandmother used. My MIL said she washed a lot of diapers on that thing when they would visit her MIL during the summer.

Anyone else ever used an outhouse? When I was very little the lady that lived close to my grandmother did not have an indoor bathroom. Her teenage daughters would babysit me sometimes. I actually thought it was fun to go to outhouse then. :anxious: They gave me a bath in a washtub in the kitchen. :o

I guess the kids at school are right, I am older than dirt. I scored 18 with a few hazy memories more.

I got 16. Edited: re:#11 If the president was on that night, you went to bed early without being told...lol

My neighbor down the road has a wringer washer, been sitting in her yard by the shed for over a year. I drool for it every time I see it as I want to make a planter out of it. I'm sure she'd sell it cheap or give it to me but I hardly ever see her there as she now lives in town but the whole family comes on Sunday for dinner and I don't want to interrupt their family time. We used one when I was a kid and I'm only 43 so you know we were dirt poor.

She also has an old wooden wagon that I'd love, love, love to have and some old 4 pane windows just sitting in the nearly falling down barn.....gasp.....what else could I find in there if I had permission and boots to wear?

My kitchen is decorated in antiques and I'm always looking for more. dd19 had some friends over last week and none of them knew what my stuff was except for the glass washboard, a railroad lantern and a metal fan.

Older than dirt here. I remember 23/24.
I have fond memories of milk being delivered to our house. The milkman smoked a pipe and I used to love the smell of the tobacco he used as the porch always smelled of it after he delivered. I remember pouring the cream off the top of milk to make whipped cream too.
When I went away to college the comforter and bed sheets were purchased w/greenstamps.
