Simplicity 5581 - It's a Sew-Along!

New postby lendube on Sun May 27, 2012 11:40 am

Join in. Here's the pattern. Simplicity 5581

One of our newest members, Dollbaby, actually gave us the idea. She is looking to make a button down shirt for her little boy and through that post we realized that several of us have this same pattern. JoAnn's has their 5 for $5.00 Simplicity patterns going on right now. So get there today or tomorrow if you want to get it cheap and join in if you like.

Now, I haven't a clue how to do a sew-along. Anyone know? Do we all do one step at a time? Do we just make it and give comments? Do we wait for everyone to get ready to lay out the pattern? Help?

Who's game?

I'm game. I think everyone should make it as they have the time, energy, and patience. Everyone could post questions, comments, and pictures here.

I'm going to pass as I don't have anyone in the family that would wear this shirt. I'll cheer from the sidelines & offer help if I can help.

I'm making a little boy's shirt since I have no appropriate fabric for dh. The only little boy I know is his ex-secretary's 5 (?) y/o. Just emailed her to ask about sizing. I think it'd be fun making a mini version since I don't sew kid's clothing.

Hmm, I have some men to sew for and would like to join in but will be traveling in about a week and have a ton of sewing to do right now. ( ;) That is why I'm on the computer instead of sewing.) I wonder if I could fit in the sew a long??????????Hmmmmm.

I'll pass for now. No one I know wears button up shirts except Joe's long sleeved work shirts which are provided. He owns a couple nicer long sleeved ones for special occasions but they don't get much use. He won't wear short sleeved button ups. I have a very similiar pattern we used back in the early 2000's for car show shirts when we took our '56 Chevy to shows and cruise-ins. We made shirts and I sat and sold them as he went around talking cars. Even got a few special orders back then. I had trouble with the collars but Joe can do them in a flash so we worked as a team.

Good luck. I'll check in and see how everyone is doing.

I will be watching but probably not sewing unless I get all the girls projects for their BDay done this week early.

I'm in, but i'm using a slightly smaller version of the pattern Burda 9711 http://www.thesewingplace.com/images/productimages/patterns/burda/2006/9711.jpg. I've cut out two tops already, it doesn't have the back yoke, but I had to make the pattern without the split color. It will have a pocket on the chest. I won't be ready to sew for a bit, as i am trying to finish off a quilt. But I hope to cut out the interfacing tomorrow.
