Table Runner & Placemats

Smilie your placemats are pretty as is, I prefer no bias tape on the edges personally that is. I can't advise on the table runner, as the couple I have made I didnt even put the batting in at all, just being thrifty I suppose. Great job and colors on the placemats though!

I vote no bias tape. The placemats are pretty "as is". As for the batting? In everything that I used warm and natural in last year there was shrinkage but it inhanced the freemotion quilting that I did. I think I would pre shrink the batting first if I didn't want to loose any of the shaping and size of the runner. I think you have to quilt every 3 inches on the warm and natural.

I like them just the way they are! You could just stitch in the ditch and it would be fine, or stitch 1/4" away from the seam line, still would work just fine. Very classy looking!

I save the package for batting because it tells you somewhere on it how close (or far apart) you need to quilt for it to hold and not shift on you.

A square table topper would be nice. You can tilt it diagonally across the table and each corner could be used like a placemat. I think it would still look fine if two corners hang over the table edge. OR.... make it diamond shaped to fit perfectly on the table.

I like the square ones too. though I have a tutorial for a long one that I want to make. If I ever get off the computer!

Using fabrics from The Stash, the Destashification Table Runner was developed:


Due to creativity trumping table width measuring, the runner is a bit wider than allows for place mats for those sitting along the long edges...

But, remaking it narrower was just not going to happen.

So, rather than try to squeeze place mats in, I purchased chargers. Square metallic gold ones were on clearance sale after the holidays - and they work great for "dressing up" the table. I also round rattan circular ones on 90% off sale (really, 90% off) which are used for more common meals.

The chargers are also smaller than place mats, so the table appears less crowded - even when seating 14!
