Daz, does your manual give you instructions on threading the machine? Are you using serger thread which is different than sewing machine thread? Typically, you thread the upper looper, lower looper, right needle, left needle on a serger. Your manual will tell you your threading order. When using the 5th thread, you thread the chain looper before threading the needles. Hope this helps. Your manual should give you the info that you need.

That would be the main problem, i dont have a manual for the machine.
ive been looking for a pdf to download but to no avail. getting slightly bored now as 3 days is far too long to be thredind a machine.
i follow the picture on the flap but it dosen't explain the end of the route well and everything i try ends up with me smoking another cigarette.
do you know where to find the pdf that i need? please and thanks...

DaZ, Is that the complete name of the machine. I have been searching but can't find a free threading diagram either. Try going to Singer.com and e-mailing customer service and see if they will direct you to a site for a free manual and/or threading diagram. You most probably want a manual because there are a lot of tricks to adjusting tensions etc that are specific to each serger/sewing machine. I wish you success. Your local Singer dealer might be willing to tell you where to look for a manual. Just tell them your financial situation. Many people will be glad to help a fellow Singer owner out. Hey! Look for a forum that discusses the singer ultralock 400 but be sure you have al your information as to the name and serial number, before you waste your time searching.

Daz, I have a serger I have had for 21 years, but I still have to look in the manual quite frequently. I cannot begin to estimate how many thousands hours I have logged on my serger, but I cannot imaging threading it without the photos to guide me, and mine are color coded for each different set. mine is a 4 thread, and the colors are green blue pink and yellow.

good evening, or morning as the case might be,
okies, the machine says on the front flap...singer ultraglide 400 electronic.
its got the colour code bits ie: blue, green, orange, yellow and purple.
its got the diagram with dots of colour to follow but in the end it not clear on how the threads end.
i have left it alone for today as our argument has been a long and furious 3 days.
i hope we can come to an understanding soon and create our long lasting relationship.
oh and where do i put pics of my work up? i have a few pics id like to show off.
thanks so far for the advise, keep it coming! :D

Daz, if you can get the book "The ABC's of Sergers", it has some basic threading information with diagrams so that you can learn the parts of the machine as well as where the threads go. I think this book will help you a lot. You can find it on Amazon.
