New and need help!!

New postby sewingcheryl on Sat Dec 04, 2010 12:08 pm

Hi.
I hope someone can help,
I am sewing Butterick 5529 view E and have never felt so ignorant about sewing, I consider myself a fairly good seamstress and this simple 4 square pattern has me pulling my hair out! :brick: Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Hi Cheryl and welcome to our board.

Can you be more specific about what you don't understand? Interesting pattern and I know what you mean about feeling dumb when something "appears" to be simple. One suggestion - set it aside for a bit and look with fresh eyes.

Hi Cheryl,
Welcome to the group!!! Which view are you making? That will help us help you. It looks like the the front of view A has 3 tucks or darts at the shoulders & the sleeves are ruched. The back of view A has a seam at the center back & it looks like folds or tucks around the top of the back neck as well as the back waist so there may be some gathering there. View B looks to be the same as view A except it has a wider cuff at the sleeve. View C looks quite simple with a neck band as does view D. View E looks like it has a lot of drape with a neckband. I gleaned this info from looking at the line drawings.

Ok, I read the pattern directions and the last step #5 doesn't make sense. If you put the wrong sides together and sew the seams, then the seams are on the right sides of the fabric, and how do you finish off the edge? When do you turn it or do you. These directions are bizarre!

Oh, forgot, Welcome to the boards! And I don't think you are losing your mind, the directions are strange. Ladies, if you click on the photo and then click on the instructions tab you can actually see the instructions for view E on the bottom of the 2nd page. It makes sense until you get to the end.

Sorry Laura, I couldn't find the directions. I think there may have been a typo & it should read right sides together. Sometimes, the directions/instructions are very poorly written in the Big 4 patterns so I seldom go by them. I go by instinct & how I think it should be put together.

Laura, Could it have been talking about making a french seam. It appears that this shrug/jacket is ment to be similar to a cacoon and the last one I did I used french seams. The pattern review item I read said the instructions were easy to understand but the reviewer made view B. I just wonder if we are missing something here.
Ok, I have found 3 butterick patterns by the same #, are you talking about the jacket or a vintage pattern??

Laura, what is the link you used to get to the pattern with the instructions? I went to butterick .com but do not see an instruction sheet. I'd love to know how to get to it.
Sewingcheryl, I hope you get it figured out and show us some picture of how it turned out.

Butterick 5529

OK, halfway down the page, there are 3 tabs, fabric and notions, instructions and size chart
If you click on instructions you get a pdf file. I can't upload the pdf file nor copy anything from it on this computer at work. Open the pdf file and you'll see the directions for view E

I don't know if this link is working, I can't seem to get it to work, so if you can't get to it, go to http://www.sewingpatterns.com, search 5529, find the pattern with all the jackets on it, and then click on the pattern picture, the picture will come up larger and you will see the tabs for the instructions.

Did the original poster ever get this figured out and can anyone provide assistance. I too am totally frustrated with this pattern. I figured this would be a quick sew and I spent over two hours last night trying to figure it out to no avail. I have been sewing off and on for years and never had this much difficulty. Wrap/jacket is self lined, no friend seaming involved. Thanks in advance.
