Making a twin size fitted sheet

I am trying to research how to go about making a fitted sheet for a twin sized bed. I have some directions for making a crib sheet, which weren't too hard to follow. The 2 biggest road blocks I'm hitting is how wide the fabric I choose needs to be, and how to avoid a center seam down the middle. I haven't had a chance to measure the mattress that's going to be used yet, so I don't have any numbers to share at this point. Can anyone give me a pointer or 2, or direct me to an online tutorial that might work?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. This is going to be a Christmas present for my GS, who will be getting his twin bed for his 4th birthday on December 10th.

I would think 45" wide fabric would cover the top & I would add fabric to both sides. You can make it the same as a crib sheet just bigger. Sorry I don't have the dimensions.

Hi Mom, thanks! That's what I was thinking too, however I'm not sure how much yardage to purchase. The fabric I want to get isn't cheap, so I have to get it right the first time! I'm also going to make either a matching or coordinating pillow case. He doesn't like top sheets because his feet get tangled up in them, so it's just a fitted sheet and pillowcase set.

I measured my son's mattress it is 75" long & 6 1/2" deep & 38" wide. You will need to add enough for whatever you want to go under & hems. I would think 4" on each end & side. so if you could find 54" or wider fabric you wouldn't have to piece it. If the bed is by a wall I would brobably only add to one side & put that at the back. You should have enough to make a pillowcase from the extra from the same yardage. If I figured right you need 5 1/2 yds fabric. That gives a few extra inches for shrinkage & straightening. or you could get 2 3/4 Yd & a coordinating (cheaper) solid to piece it. Then enough more of the first fabric for the pillowcase.

I think that the width of the bed plus twelve inches(provided the mattress is six inches thick )plus about two inches for hemming and elastic would do. The same should be done for the length of the mattress. I hope this helps.

Standard twin width is supposed to be 39 inches wide.. I dont remember the length, but it is the same as a double..

I googled and found this link that talks about how to make children bed sheets. It gives calculations according to the mattress size. Hope this helps

Wow, Ladies!! This is great info--thank you all so very much! Judee, I'm definately gonna check out that link---hopefully the info there will be printer-friendly so I can print it out for future reference. Whenever I find good tutorials or pattern directions online I like to print them and put them in a binder I set up when I first started sewing. That way I know I will always have it handy when (or if) needed.

Well...when someone asks a question it peaks my curiosity...so I just go to Google and start searching and looking at links to see what I can come up with. If I find something that seems useful then I post it.
