Let's Have A Snowball Fight

For Christmas, I made my great nephew a set of 12 snowballs out of fleece and did a little tag that says "Let's Have A Snowball Fight". This was a machine embroidery design set from Embroidery Garden. He loved them. My sister said that they are so soft. I can picture that Nicholas playing with his younger brother by next year. They are machine washable which is great for my niece.

My great nephew is 2-1/2 yrs old and his baby brother is a year old. I figured they can play together with these or they can play with their adult uncles who adore them. Of course, there is also Grandad, Nana, Grandma, Poppi, GranKen, etc.

I'm in the process of making some of Embroidery Garden set of the animals to give to a family at the childcare. The mom gave me and Dan a gift card at Christmas time, took us completely off guard, most of those families don't have a pot to *** in and to get a gift card from someone we see so rarely and her comment to us was " Thanks to the two of you for caring for our children and making this place look so nice" I have to say.. more than what we have gotten from the "management" in 2 years!!! So, I have been racking my brain what to do, and then someone on facebook posted the animals and I thought it would be perfect. Her children are 2 and 6. Where they hard to do Marty? I did a test bunny on some scrap fleece I had, Its a hot mess!!! But now I am working on the bunny and using a flatter fleece so its working better. But it takes some time, I have to embroider the face and then take my machine apart to sew the panels together. I should just cut the pieces first for the faces and do that and then sew it all together. Well... I have this week.

Karen, these were not hard to do ... each snowball has 6 pieces shaped like an orange slice. The design pack calls for 6 snowballs but I did 12. It took a half of a yard of fleece for all of the snowballs. I cut out all of the pieces first and pinned 6 shapes together. Working assembly line style, I sewed 2 pieces for the front, 2 pieces for the back on all 12 snowballs (as per instructions). I used 1/4 inch seam allowances. Then I embroidered all of the front pieces with the 6 different faces. However, I would stop my machine and change up the colors on the faces so they were not all identical. With the faces embroidered, I went back and sewed the side pieces on and then the back leaving an opening on one side for stuffing the snowballs. Once stuffed, I hand stitched each snowball closed with invisible stitches (the most time consuming part) and viola, snowballs. For the tag, I embroidered a piece of fleece adding 4 layers of tear-away stabilizer on the back. I did not remove the stabilizer. I sewed another piece of fleece catching a piece of ribbon on the back close to the embroidered stitching. Then I used my pinking shears to trim the edges and I was done. I did these over a 2 day period working a few hours every day.

I am sure you saw my post on facebook of my animals, and the mom was very moved that I would give her and her children something like that. I do hope they liked them. I thought they were darn cute...

Karen, your animals are adorable. So glad that the mom loved your work. I certainly did. You should post a pic here ... just resize your pic's pixals to 350 x 350. It's easy to do. I can walk you thru the steps if you need help doing it. If your pic was taken on your phone, send it by email to yourself to save in your hard drive. Then post it here. It's really not very hard to do.

Karen, I'd like to see a pic of your embroidery project. I think I'm the only one in the country without a facebook page.

Watched a Sewing with Nancy show yesterday that showed how to embroider the front of a RTW t-shirt making it a lace up front (like a Henley only with laces and eyelets) and it also showed how to embroider the sleeves to really dress up a plain tee. They were very pretty and looked easy to make if you know how to use an embroidery machine.
