Storing thread

New postby sewingrandma on Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:29 pm

OK, I've gone over the archive for storing and some of you store in plastic boxes, some in the rolling carts, and some in baskets and others on the wooden racks. I'm trying to come up with an easier way to store all my serger threads because the drawer that I keep them in is full and I have to move furniture around just to get to the drawer and I have the habit of not putting it away when I'm done with it because of all the moving I have to do. If I keep in the drawer I'm going to need to rearrange my room and I don't see that happening as the room is full now and everything fits where it is. Basically the only space I have left is wall space over my cutting table. I've looked at the thread racks at Joann's and Hancock's and have coupons so they wouldn't be but so expensive but I would need at least 4 of the cone sized ones. I read where someone put plastic covers over their rack to keep the dust out but not sure if it would be effective here. (Live in the country with fields for farming all around and there is a lot of dust). Anyone have anything to add? Still happy with the way you store thread?

Not sure how your cutting table is set up but would those plastic rolling carts with large storage drawers work for you? You could roll them under the cutting table where they would be accessible and yet protected from the dirt and dust. I store my serger cones in the rolling plastic carts and it works very well. My machine embroidery thread and my garment sewing thread and all other thread is in my sewing cabinet drawers or they are in large ziplock bags that keeps the dust out.

My cutting table takes up one wall along with 2 rolling carts. Under the table I have totes with fabric and projects already cut out waiting. I did some searching online tonight for thread storage and there really isn't much out there. I did some rearranging tonight with the drawers on the rolling cart that I keep my thread in currently. Simple as moving the drawer up 2 levels so I don't have to move furniture in order to open it. Sometimes it is the simple things that aren't all that obvious until it hits you in the face so to speak. I also removed some dividers I had in the drawer and organized the thread and flipping some of them so I could fit more in. Right now I have all but 8 cones in the drawer and there isn't any room to put them in. I may pull out my white thread and some neutral colors and put in a plastic container made for holding cone thread that I already have and store it on my shelf, that way it will be handy since I do use the white the most now. I'll keep looking for something else as I did see a few things I liked but don't have the space for them. One was a tray that is 12 1/2 inches square with wire springs that hold each cone with a base to keep the cone in place also. If my drawer was 2 inches wider I could put two of these side by side and on top of each other. I also found a DIY site that showed peg board with dowels glued in and a border put on as a frame. I'd have to put some sort of wedge behind it so that it would slant out at the bottom so the cones wouldn't slide off anytime the wall got knocked.

I have 3 wall racks of regular sewing thread and embroidery thread. I just bought a bunch of floriani embroidery thread because my machine was having issues and they recommended floriani thread. I got it half off... pretty good deal. Course when my machine came back from the shop and I finished my embroidery project I used my coats and clark thread along with floriani and my machine stitched fine. Go figure.
