Altering a suit coat.

A customer brought in a suit coat that is a 46 L and he wears a 44 L. He wants me to take it in so that if fits him. As far as I can tell the shoulders look to be the same as the 44 he brought in to have the sleeves shortened so I am guessing that the only difference is in the chest. Any suggestions on the easiest way to do this?

Gina, going down a size requires you to take the jacket lining out, take in the seams at least 1/2 inch all the way around, taking in the collar, shortening the sleeves from the top, measure the shoulders once you take out the sleeves, the shoulder pad, and the sleeve head. You will almost be making a new jacket in order for it to look right. You will also have to take in the lining. You shouldn't have to do any alterations to the pockets but to the shell of the jacket, padding and lining, you will. Mary Roehr has a wonderful book on altering ready to wear clothing for men and one for women. I use them constantly as I alter clothing for my church members. Call me if you need help.

I got them directly from Mary Roehr's website ... each book was under $20 back in 2008, a worthy investment. They are also on Amazon.

I ordered her books and got a few more to sell in the store. I would rather sew then alter, so if someone has the want to learn, I now have the books to sell them. I figure the loss in alteration business will be easily recooped in lessons and sales if they learn how to sew.
