Best fabric for table cloths?

New postby Pudge99 on Sat May 11, 2013 11:31 am

So the alterations and custom sewing side of my business is booming! I have a gentleman who would like a table cloth made for his table at Vendor Fairs. I'm looking for something that can be folded up and stuffed in a box between fairs. Not too pricey because he is just starting out himself. Just needs to be basic black, and I am going to applique his business name on it.
Any suggestions?

As I do mostly quilting, Kona cotton is what I like for their black. It is only 40-ish inches wide and with repeated sun exposure I'm not sure about fade resistance. A number of years ago I bought rip-stop nylon for mending snow pants but my kiddoes have moved beyond that era.

I would use a linen blend fabric (doesn't wrinkle too much) and it does come in about a 54-58 inch width. Hope that this helps.

I use Polyester double knit that was left in Adam's house when he moved in. I have black for most sales & pastel for the one we do @ Easter. It doesn't wrinkle ever & is wide enough for whatever tables we use

I went to Hancocks today and felt a polyester/rayon gaberdine. It felt right, but at $13 a yard he might not be into it. Gonna bounce the numbers off him tomorrow and see what he says.

Gina, I made one out of a stable/firm double knit a few years ago. It took the applique well and resisted wrinkles.

I vote for the double knit polyester... I find rayon to be unstable, even when blended with polyester or nylon..

Here's the table cloth. I haven't gotten all the letters stitched down yet, but wanted to share now in case I forget when I am finished with it.

Gina, what fabric did you end up using? Inquiring minds want to know.

I went with the gaberdine. It just felt right for a table cloth to me, and he was good with the price I quoted him.
