baby measurements

New postby sewingrandma on Wed Feb 20, 2013 11:44 am

Does anyone have or can get measurements for a 0-3 month sized baby? I need a waist and ankle measurement. All the patterns I have say to cut elastic the length needed and don't give an actual measurement. One of my babies is 40 and the other 2 are nearly there too and their babies are closing in on being tweens way to fast. Thanks.

Brockie, how about snoop shopping in the infants department of a clothing store with your tape measure in your purse. Find something in the size you need and measure where you need to.

I checked some infant patterns and each said 3/4 yd of 1/2 inch elastic for the different views. The patterns showed separates with elastic at the ankles and at the waist. I think that you would be safe using that amount. If you could get the correct size from the parents, then that would be better. I would use about 1/2 yd for the waist and 1/8 yd for each ankle. When a pattern calls for elastic, I always made a band as I don't like elastic at the upper arm, waist or ankles on babies. Hope this helps you figure out what you need.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually found some actual baby measurements on line. She has a lot of free charity patterns and listed my most used measurements needed from her 12 week grandson. I know babies vary greatly in size but I at least now have a ball park to work from.

Welcome to the boards. I'll get back later with the charity sites. There are quite a few out there and I need to dig around to find them.

These are a few of the sites that I have gotten patterns from. I like Bev's cottage and Bundles of love. They offer free patterns for sewing and knit/crochet. You can also find lots of free patterns just by doing a search what you are interested in sewing, i.e. free patterns baby blankets, baby bibs, baby sleepers etc. There is a You Tube video on making a self binding baby blanket that I like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqwdNqMZ8Ro
Hope this is what you were looking for. Once you get started looking it sort of snowballs with all the different links offered.
