Can I piece batting

New postby sewingrandma on Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:07 pm

I'm not a quilter but have made some quilt tops for babies and thought I had enough batting for them. The piece I have is long enough but not wide enough. Can I piece it together to fit? If so how would I so it doesn't get too bulky in that area.
Thanks for any and all suggestions, tips, hints. Any secrets to putting all the layers together so that I don't become a raving lunatic. I'm so not a quilter and I really am in awe of the work that you all show here.

I have pieced batting - it is quite simple. I but it up to each other, not overlapping, and use huge oversewing stitches. Generally it is to hold it in place until you quilt it and then it says fine.

I am not really a quilter but have made small quilts for my grandsons.
I think I read somewhere that you pieced batting in a wavy line so that there would be no weak spot.

I have some iron on seam tape made for that purpose but for smaller pieces it can be done like magot/trini have said.

The wavy line is so it blends/interconnects more, not a sharp change if the batting shifts.

OH!! I LOVE the piecing tape!!!! It makes it so simple and easy and quick!!! Totally one of the best notions I have found!! I've done the basting and also done giant zigzag on the machine, but the piecing tape is so much easier.

Thank you Piney ;) I haven't heard of piecing tape, must look for it next time I am at the QS.

That's it. Most quilt stores seem to carry it, not sure about Joann's.
