suggestions for a good overall sewing/craft magazine in prin

New postby sewhappyrtr on Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:35 am

Suggestions please for a good overall sewing/craft magazine in print for DH and DS to get me for subscription. I know Marty has been displeased with a print magazine.. but I have never gotten a subscription to a sewing/craft magazine so don't even know where to look for one. Thanks
Oh... machine embroidery would be a good something also...

Karen, I look at them in the stores frequently, but I like Stitch. I think it only comes out quarterly, but I may be confused. I subscribed to Sewing news for a long time, but had to quit when the economy went bad several years ago. There is also a mag called Crafts that I used to get also. same reason to discontinue. MONEY..

My favorite sewing magazine is Threads which focuses on garment sewing. Sew News (is one that I don't like) is focused mostly on crafts and beginner type projects. Creative Machine Embroidery is good as is Designs in Machine Embroidery. Also, I like Vogue Pattern magazine. I used to take Sew Beautiful magazine but it has been discontinued. Some of my friends like Stitch, Craft, Create as it has overall quick projects but I haven't tried it. Hope that this helps.

My choices are limited because of my lack of interest in Machine Embroidery. That craze came along just too late in my lifetime for me to get into it. Too much money to even get started . Think of all that thread you have to purchase after that terribly expensive machine you have to buy. You need a lot of income to have that as part of your hobby. I am in the low income quadrant of the population ever since my retirement in 1999, so that lets me out. And I just don't do enough of Martha Pullen type of sewing to like Threads Magazine. I feel like she looks down her nose at everyday sewers and crafters like me. I sew for fun and only for fun. I love to see the faces when I give somebody something that I made. That gives me great joy. And No hassles and ripping (or not too much ripping) just the joy of creation and ability to lay down at night and get a good solid nights sleep and wake up refreshed to a new day to see what mischief I can get into. Today I ran errands all day before getting a much needed haircut. Now I feel really human again after getting rid of that mop of hair. Ready for 60 to 80 rascals tomorrow at VBS. From 9 am to 3 pm with a break and a lunch time out. Crafts sound great for this year. We (leader and us 2 helpers) have been working together now for more than 3 summers, and that is great becuse we know each others strengths and weaknesses. My hairdresser said I did not act like an 80 year old. I thanked her for that compliment. LOL

Libby, In my defense of thread for my embroidery machine.. I have yet to run out of thread and I have embroidered a fair share of projects... not an immense amount, but for me I feel I have done quite a bit of machine embroidery.. the spools are quite large and even though you might need many colors for one design.. a person does use the same colors for a lot of different designs at least for the designs I have done..
And my machine also sews so I also use it for that. I probably buy more regular thread for sewing and needles than anything for machine embroidery. and I have gotten alot of free designs from the internet too. Although I have purchased designs too. But, then you have those designs forever also..

I still need to look up the magazines... been busy.. :D :D

Someone subscribes to Threads Magazine for me. Hubby?? I'm not sure. The mag keeps coming even though he is Impaired by his stroke since Jan. 2013. Anyway, I like Threads but I also like one about up cycling clothing. Hmm, cant remember the name.
Maybe I'll rember it later.
Marty, I hope Martha Pullen hasn't landed on hard times. I think her little store on the outskirts of Huntsville is gone also.

Martha Pullen has created a publishing business and just published a new book called G.R.A.C.E, for those who want to open a small business either home sewing or other entrepreneurial ventures. She sold her company to Hoffman Media in 2004 and remained a major shareholder. In 2013, Hoffman Media sold the company to F&W Media who quit publishing Sew News magazine, moved the warehouse to Indiana, and has generally skewed the heirloom sewing/smocking world. Martha's husband, Joe Pullen, has dementia so she has cut back on her traveling. Martha does have a "no compete" clause that I think is good for 2 or maybe it's 5 yrs. She has just launched a new website focusing on small businesses and does a few sewing events throughout the year. With F&W Media, they are producing her new Martha Pullen TV shows (subscription only - $100 a yr) and have taken over her online Internet Embroidery Club. The sewing schools have been cancelled and those who went to the one in February have complained about how "awful" it was. They had one scheduled for Atlanta in April but it was cancelled. People from all over were upset as they had booked hotel reservations and airline flights. From all reports, it seems like F&W Media has ruined the Martha Pullen Company and it's name.
