September's Sewing 2012

I just finished another string backpack made from a T-shirt. This belonged to ds, and it was too small for him, yet one of his favorite T-shirts. I cut the hem off and sewed it to the top and had a ready made casing; also, it lowers the design a little bit.

I cut out several baby kimonos yesterday getting ready to sew tomorrow. Too much on my plate today.
Made matching baby hats and booties on Monday. Brings back memories of sewing for my kids and then the grands.

I have to hem and put the buttons on a shirt for me. Then I'm going to make my daughter a pretty little pouch to put stuff in because she likes such things.

I am making Kwik Sew 3470 view A, in a 3x with a broad back adjustment. I will put some elastic across the back at the high waist because I think it will be too wide at the lower portion but needed extra back width at the armscye/ I may, should have made size 2x with broad back and large bust adjustment instead of 3x but couldn't wrap my head around the combination adjustment. We will see. I did fit the pattern up to her one day after churcha and havn't seen her since to pinfit the garment to her. I cought a little tuck of fabric up in one side at the bust gathering seam right in front but I think it wont be noticable and think if I start picking serged stitches out of the cheap sheer fabric, that I will have a unrepairable mess. We will see? All the fabric is out of my stash. This top is to go with the 10 goer skirt. It has facing pattern but I think I just need to bind the edge with a non print fabric that will blend with the main color of the

I like that top & will have to add it to my list of patterns when I go back to Hancock Fabrics. I need some new tops.

My September sewing has been - 3 quilt tops (2 of them finished by machine quilting); another quilt top has the HST made but not sashed; a bag for co-worker & 2 wristlets from that leftover fabric; a fleece jacket for ME; an Advent calendar is started; a fleece vest is cut out and ready to sew; a totebag for ME is cut out ready to sew (I forgot the zipper and couldn't get motivated to make it until I got the zipper). I'm going shopping today to get that, some fusible fleece to finish the Advent calendar and flannel to make a baby quilt for husband/wife teachers I work closely with. I could be in trouble because the Amish store I'm going to has a great fabric department!

Brockie, what pattern do you use, and what kind of fabric are the kimonos and booties made from? I would like to try baby clothes, as I like to give something I have made at baby showers. Do you have any pics of any you have made?

Temom, I used soft knits for all of them. One that I've sewn already was from McCalls 9407 in a newborn size and it was huge looking. The hat is big enough for a toddler. I made booties and hat from Kwik Sew 2433 and these are more in line with a newborn sized foot and head. Super quick too. Then I looked thru my Sewing for baby Kwik Sew book and found instructions on how to change their sleeper pattern to a kimono, very simple BTW, and cut out several all in soft knits. My week hasn't gone exactly as planned so haven't gotten back to sewing yet but will keep you posted as to ease and size of the ones cut. No pictures as yet. I will add I've always liked Kwik sew for baby/kids clothing as they seem to be a better fit for the size range they give. Never have had luck with McCalls or Simplicity fitting babies or toddlers without a lot of pattern adjustments.
