My dad wasn't really a hoarder bit had a bit of everything in the garage as he was a "tinkerer" of many things.
It was an absolute nightmare when he passed away as none of knew what some of the stuff even was!
Mom did alot of research before she sold the big stuff like the welder, planer, air compressor , table saw, and VW engines but once all of that was out of the way, we put up a sign and an ad that gave his name and held a sale. Everyone in town knew him and what treasures they could find in the garage.
I know we sold stuff for less than it was worth but it wasn't about the money. Mom wanted to move and it took us nearly two years of clearing and sorting before she could do that.
Mom is now in FL and has told me to keep her computer, camera, oak file cabinet and personal stuff anyone wants and sell the rest with the trailer when she goes.
At the least, everyone should at least know what stuff is worth and if it depreciates with age esp if finances will be an issue. The airplane he built sold for $5K on eBay, he had nearly $15 in it but what were we supposed to do wtih an airplane?!
