change from buttons to zipper?

New postby Mom of Six on Fri Apr 13, 2012 7:08 pm

How hard will it be to change the back of a child's dress from buttons to zipper?
It is an old pattern that Mia picked. It is all cut out but nothing is sewn. it has a bodice & gathered skirt. Can I just cut it down to enough past the center back to sew the zipper in. She saw her sister's dress today & decided she likes zippers better. I have a zipper & would have to go through my buttons to try to find enough to match.
I am going to machine hem Kayla's dress tonight & it will be done.

As long as you have a seam allowance & it's not gathered on each side where the bodice & skirt meet in the center back, I don't see any problem with using a zipper.

Barb, all you would have to do is use the center back as the stitching line.

thanks that was what I was thinking but it was getting late so I wasn't going to try anything last night. Going back to bed now (2:15AM) will work on it later
