I want to try a simple pattern with a fly front

New postby temom on Thu Jun 16, 2011 2:23 pm

I want to try to make a simple pair of shorts, capris, or pants with a fly front. Does anyone have a recomendation? Did I mention it needs to be simple? I really want to branch out a little bit with my sewing, as I really limit myself right now.
Any thoughts? I personally HATE McCall patterns. Any others you have tried and liked?

My friend who taught Home Ec at college level told me to just follow each step in order from the pattern instructions. That is how I did it and had no trouble. I did it for my sons. I hate fly fronts for myself. Only on Jeans..

Theresa, you're making me nuts trying to remember this pattern I made with a fly front. It had a totally different approach and it worked like a charm. Wait a minute! I might know which pattern it is. Let me check.

Got it. It's New Look 6709. I made a pair of pants from it and I loved the way they went together. The fit was real good too. There are many, many options. I made View D but long. The pant legs are quite wide and I remember the zipper going in so nicely. Take a look. http://cgi.ebay.com/UNCUT-New-Look-6709 ... 5d2d6453fb

Apparently it's out of print but here is a new one on Ebay for only $3.00.

Theresa, I like Vogue 7881 by Claire Shaeffer. She gives excellent directions & I like the waistband that is adjustable for a tilted waist. The fit is great.

I hate sewing zippers. I don't usually pick patterns with a fly front, but found one with a fake fly front. I LOVE wearing these capris and need to find time to make me a couple more.

Maybe these are too simple. ;) The back has a yoke, so they fit better than most pants with an elastic waist.
I'm creative. You can't expect me to be neat too.

Marty, what is a tilted waist?
Lennie, I like that pattern, but alas, I haven't lost that many inches yet.
Bama, that is really pretty.

Theresa, a tilted waist is when you have a little bit of a sway back. Almost every female has some sort of tilted waist especially as we get older & have had children. Our waists thicken & our tummies are a little fuller & the back side is a little flatter. If you look sideways in a mirror, it is noticeable. With this pattern, the waistband has a seam in the back & curves so that it fits closer around the waist. There is no back gaposis or pooching of fabric when sitting. I find that this is my favorite pant pattern. Claire Shaeffer is known for her books & DVDs on basic couture techniques as well as on fabrics which I have. I love her books "Fabric Sewing Guide" & "Sew Any Fabric". I consider them to be an essential part of my sewing library.

I have a Connie Crawford pattern that I like but it has elastic in the back. I don't know if it is out of print or not.

If you change the words little to a lot, that would describe me. Being petite hasn't helped any, as petites have thicker waists anyway (no room for the internal organs).
