Help! Homecoming is just over 2 weeks away!

Postby Mule on Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:41 pm

As we were taking a break while running errands yesterday, my daughter casually mentioned that Homecoming is early this year -- September 17th! That means I have just over 2 weeks to come up with a dress, and I'm a slow sewer.

I ran to Joann's on my way to work this morning and bought some blush colored satin, and some silver mesh to use as an overlay. First question -- I'm looking at the care instructions for the satin (100% polyester) and it says wash cool/tumble dry low, but then it says "do not iron". I can still use an iron on the wrong side, or on the right side with a press cloth? Right?? I can't sew if I can't press the seams..... So someone please tell me yes and make me feel better!

One thing that kept the panic level in check is she wants another strapless dress with a short, full skirt. So I thought I would just use the same pattern as last year (modified version of Simplicity 2440) and I could skip the muslin/fitting steps and hopefully blitz right through it. I had her try it on, and it fits quite snugly (which is a good thing on a strapless dress). However, the fit on the bodice doesn't seem quite right. It is really snug across the bust, yet there is a loose pocket right below (over the waist/stomach area). I don't remember her having this problem last year, but she was a little smaller so the dress was looser overall, and she wore it with a thick sash across the waist. Could this mean the cup size is too small? She's bigger there than she was last year, which could explain why we didn't notice any problem. When I made it, I chose the pattern pieces for the B cup size. That's the size she wears now, so it seems like it should still be OK, but realistically I suppose she's a pretty generous B cup. So do you think this issue is because I need to choose a larger cup size (something I've never encountered when sewing for myself :) ), or should I choose a different pattern altogether?

I just need to get this figured out so I can start sewing the darned dress!!

Beth, I've sewn with lots of satin & a press cloth is necessary when pressing seams. Also, wash & dry the fabric. I just wash it on normal & dry on normal as that is how I handle my laundry. Doesn't seem to hurt it any & the sizing is removed. As far as your pattern goes, the little pooch in the front under the bust may be a little too much ease. As far as the bust being extra tight, You might just use a smaller seam allowance in the bust area plus add stays so that the dress hugs the body closer. You could also add an inset piece where the sash would go. Do you have any books like "The Fabric Sewing Guide" or "Sew Any Fabric" by Claire B Shaeffer? They are a must in the sewing room. The books cover all types of fabric & answers so many questions from needle/stitch selection to care of the fabric. I have to have my books handy when sewing garments. Good luck on the dress for your daughter.

Beth, when I had to sew a satin garment, I called the County Agent here in town and she gave me all kinds of good info. She told me to insert a brown paper bag under the seam allowances on each seam when I was pressing. That is a "MUST" she said. If you do otherwise your seam marks will show on the outside. Mine was also the polyester satin and the outfit I made was an elvis costume for someone at work.. Agent also said use a new needle and be sure its the right type and size..I don't remember now what that was, but I followed her instructions to the t, and Katrina won the prize for the best performance in the United Way Show..

Thank you, I think I have the pressing thing figured out. I sewed a satin dress last year with no problems, but seeing the "Do Not Iron" thing threw me for a loop. Possibly it was on the care instructions for the satin I used previously, but I didn't realize it. They gave me the bolt this time, so it had all the care instructions.

The bigger issue is the fit thing. Do you think I need to make a bigger cup size, or is that not the problem?

Beth, when I made a satin outfit for dgd, Marty recommended a #9 microtex needle and the outfit turned out great. It didn't have a single pukered seam, which I have seen on many a homemade satin frock.

My needles are good -- already checked them. I rarely have any puckering problems with my machine though.

I started making a muslin of the dress using the C cup bodice. I also lengthened it 1/2" based on her current measurements. Hopefully she'll be home tomorrow to try it on.

I saw this post and thought WOW! it isn't me this time. I always end up sewing formal gowns at the last minute. Sorry I don't know much about your fitting issues but I thought you should know that I feel your pain.

Thanks. And it gets even better -- she came home from school this afternoon and told me she got asked to go to Homecoming at another school as well, so she'll need a second dress for that. But no worries, that one's not till the 23rd....

Goodness, you have 3 wks to produce 2 dresses. I'm sure that your daughter doesn't want you to experience the "empty nest" syndrome. LOL!!! Keep us posted & we want to see pics when you're done or throughout the process. After all, moms are considered "Wonder Woman".
