By the yard

New postby missfleecy on Wed May 23, 2012 5:33 pm

From today's Not Always Working, a supposedly true incident:

FABRIC STORE | WISCONSIN, USA

Me: “I’d like you to measure off three feet of that material for me.”

Clerk: “I can’t do that.”

Me: “Why?”

Clerk: “We can only sell it by the yard.”

(As the clerk is obviously high school age, I try another approach.)

Me: “Okay, then give me one yard of that material.”

Clerk: *cheerfully* “Okay, I can do that!”

As most quilting patterns always specify the amounts in yards, I usually forget and go to the counter and say 2 yds instead of 2 meters. The young gals sometimes look back at me confused :? Then I just say oh, I meant 2 metres. I've been in some quilt shops where the ladies buying fabric are asking for conversion from yards to metres...as they don't want to buy 1 inch more than necessary! I'm sure some of them get home and run out of fabric because they didn't want to get any extra... :shame: Unfortunately, that rarely happens to me...cause I usually add extra so I don't run out. Guess that's why I have so much fabric... :(

That me too Judy! You get some funny looks in the US when you ask for meters too.

I can work with in either fluently but I don't convert. It seems fabric shops near the border would have the capacity to easily measure both.
