Another VQC Quilt - From Summer in the Park Pattern

New postby HeyJudee on Thu May 24, 2012 8:53 am

Well I guess I never posted pics of this quilt before (if I did, I can't find my previous post).

I pieced this top the weekend that my aunt broke her leg...so didn't get around to putting the borders on until sometime in April. Then it got put aside again until I finally pulled it out last weekend and quilted it. Since I haven't been doing much quilting and this was a basic design, I just quilted stitch-in-the-ditch with my walking foot.

I used the Missouri Star Quilt Company's tutorial for Summer in the Park but cut 2.5" WOF strips of coordinating fabrics instead of a jelly roll. And I just arranged the blocks to give it a scrappy look. On FB I saw a preview of a quilt in the August issue of Quilter's World which is the same scrappy idea...but done in gorgeous colours...red, black. grey and whites. I had to comment on their photo that I had just finished one using the MSQC tutorial.

Anyways, here are pics of the top. This quilt has been washed & dried in the dryer which is what they want us to do once it is finished. Since the batting and the flannel backing weren't prewashed, they shrink and make it look old...which is not my favourite thing. :(

I love the effect Judy, of the colours and boxes - very three dimensional.

The colours in the pic look more browns & whites....but some of those fabrics are deep wine colours. And I used the leftover strips to make the binding. I'm probably gonna make this quilt again...but with more fabrics and brighter colours.

Interesting quilt. The more I look at it the more I see different aspects. Sometimes the 3D effect is very pronounced, sometimes not. It's also got a strange rolling motion as I scroll up and down......... (Okay, sounds like I smoked my lunch.) :D

Hi Judy,
I really love this quilt pattern. I am thinking it would work well for our young grandsons in strong primary colours. Thanks for sharing. How are your Aunt and Uncle doing? Take care.
