Seams showing thru thin pink cotton

New postby kjh9835 on Sun Jan 08, 2012 10:06 am

I bought nursery fabric at JoAnn's for the pink/brown and green/brown baby quilts. The fabric is thin and light colored so the seams are showing thru after I press them. The center is white background with polka dots, the edges are solid pink and the corners are stripes. The backing will be polka dots and the binding solid pink.

Should I trim the seam allowances down to barely there? I'm stitching in the ditch once I have the sandwich together, is that going to make it worse or help b/c there's layers?

Wish I'd paid more attention when I bought the fabrics, these were coordinating and since I only needed one, I bought just enough for one instead of 1 yd each of 3 and the backing fabric. Haven't done the green/brown one yet but it's the same fabric, just different colors.

Thanks,
Kathy

Coming from me it's a laugh but are you pressing your seams to the side of the darker colored fabric? ................ That's all I've got.

I wouldn't trim them. JMHO Usually you press the seams to the darker fabric. But sometimes depending on the patterns, you have to press to the lighter side and the seams will show...esp. with white. So I'd just not worry about it.

They are about the same :(

Both light colored, one white print, one solid pink. If I press towards the stripes on the corners, then I can't press the opposite direction towards the polka dot center panel. Guess I'll just do it up anyway and see what the outcome is.

DON"T trim the seams, in the end chances are you won't see them anyways, i have done many a quilt where you think you will see nothing but seems but in the end when its finished and quilted, it is not something that is sticking out.

Another option is to press seams open. But if you are stitch in ditching, press seams to darker side.

It was a non-issue, once I made the sandwich and quilted it, they are barely noticeable. I broke my even feed foot, it wasn't feeding evenly so I quit until Joe got up. He took it apart and said it was worn out, I've prob. had it 15+ years.

I had another for a different machine so we re-arranged the sewing room, went to the attic for a foot pedal and got the 201 set up with the second even feed foot. Hmm, I like that machine better than the 401 for quilting so now I have them BOTH set up and my serger is under my sewing table.

Glad to hear that you have another (maybe better) machine for quilting. And like Carman said, usually the seams don't show once everything goes together. Good that everything worked out!

Have you figured out how to lower the feed dogs yet to attempt FMQ? Doodling on paper sure helps get you loosened up for it.
