Hancock's

New postby sewingrandma on Sun May 01, 2016 1:19 pm

I was in my local store yesterday and boy did they have a lot of junk. Things that I've never seen carried in the store before-flash lights, battery operated lamps to name a few. They all had red stickers with sale on them. They still have a sign on the door that new deliveries arriving daily. I wonder if it is this junk that they are referring to.
I did find some nice fabric to make a pair of slacks from if I can get my pattern to fit me right. DH came in the store with me and he was the one that found the fabric-camel color with a dark brown pinstripe.
Notions are still 25% off. There spot the dot fabric has been put with the 'Value' fabric and is at 30% where as everything else is at 40% except for fleece which is at 60%. If you receive email from Hancock's the percentage off on-line is the same for the stores, at least it is with mine.
On another note, for those of you who knit or crochet Joann's has a coupon for Caron one pounder on sale for $4.99.

Brockie, Great America Stores (the liquidation company) puts any ole piece of junk in the stores to increase their sales. I have not been to Hancock Fabrics since it was announced that they had filed bankruptcy and would close. I realized that there is not anything in their stores that I would want except one of their pattern cabinets. Beyond that, I have no interest in going to the store. I don't shop at JoAnn's either as it is an hour each way in heavy traffic. I have over 40 years of patterns collected, lots of fabric in the attic as well as in my van plus what I have in the bins in my living and dining room. I have one bin in the dining room of heirloom sewing fabric. There are other shops in the Memphis area where I can shop so I'm not desperate to go to Hancock Fabrics. Besides, I love the fabric that I have ordered from Vogue Fabric's store and will probably order more as the need arises. Right now, all of my funds are going to my trip to Washington, DC on Friday to see my daughter graduate with her Masters of Divinity degree. The ceremony (only 150 graduates) will be in the National Cathedral. This trip will be very costly but so worth it.

Have a wonderful trip Marty, enjoy every second of it. Congratulations to your daughter.

I wish I had other local options than Hancock's and Joann's for purchasing fabric. The only other fabric store is so far away from us and over the years traffic has worsened to the point we don't venture that far from home, plus it is extremely expensive.
I figured when I saw all the junk in the store I figured it was the liquidation company bringing in the stuff to boost sales. The other Hancock's that is now closed didn't have all that crap.

After Hancocks closes, and I refuse to go to Joannes, I will have o go to Gastonia, a little over 20 miles away to shop for fabrics. The store is famous all over the south, so I will be OK , it just bugs be to have to drive that far. Mary Jos is a fantastic store and they have most anything you could ask for in the way of fabrics. We have always gone there for specially fine fabrics when they were needed. Bridal, Religious, etc...

I never had a chance to say goodbye...my local Hancock closed and I never made it for the going out of business sale. :( Sounds like maybe I didn't miss much, though.

I agree. That is why I haven't gone. I need to talk to Donna that works there. She was hired less than a year ago, and she really liked working there. She is a confirmed fabricholic like most of us..

Our Hancock's closed here probably 3-5 years ago. I miss it. Joann's has messed with how they display fabric and notions and how they cut out fabric and then how you pay for stuff. Its highly annoying.

I very seldom go to Joann's. They just don't have the type of fabric I like, or the prices. It is mostly quilting, fleece or special occasion with some baby thrown in for good measure. They used to be generous with their coupons but not any longer. Depending on who is cutting the fabric you'll be asked you if you want what is left of the bolt if it is a yard or less for half price. I do know they do not give you more than a yard if that is what you ask for. I've had to ask them not to stretch the fabric when they cut at times also.

I went to Hancocks this afternoon. Got enough for 3 summer gowns. They said they would be there til June. They know me and will let me know before they close. I hate they are closing. I will not go to Joanns.
