How is winter affecting your life?

New postby icetbear on Tue Feb 11, 2014 9:11 pm

Wow, Mother Nature is really having a temper tantrum :( Bitter temps, snow, wind, ice storms and flooding are the flavour of the day. I hope sewing/needlework is giving everyone a bit of relief from the outdoors. I am busy with quilting, smocking and scrapbooking once home from work. Our family is spread from Alberta to Missouri to Ontario and we are all trying to stay warm ;) Take care.

In Memphis, the snow and ice have missed us ... it's just a little colder than normal. I'm staying busy with my normal activities and rarely wear a coat even if the temps are in the 30's as we have had some great sunny days. It just doesn't seem very cold to me. The weather forecasters keep predicting gloom and doom but it hasn't hit my neighborhood at all. Most of it goes North, East and South of where I live.

We've had a couple of bad snows, at least for this area, and the temps have been cooler than normal. I don't own a winter coat but a light weight jacket is heavy enough for me. Have also had a lot of rain this winter so the ground is extremely soft and in places muddy. Keeping our fingers crossed the driveway will hold up until after the spring rains are over. This is the first year that it has gotten muddy in the 24 years I've lived here. DH missed a few days of work because just about everything was shut down. We have no kids in school so that isn't a problem. I'm beginning to take a strong dislike to the crawlers across the tv screen announcing the bad weather, closings, delays etc. I know we need to know about them but having them run constantly is a bit much and them covering 1/3 of the screen is even worse. In this age of smart phones, computers etc. the messages will be found by those who need to find them.
My sewing continues but am having to use even more artificial light because of the gloomy skies. Normally on sunny days my drapes are wide open and sun floods my sewing room. I have found that I tend to not work on the darker colors when I have to depend on lamps for my lighting. One big thing is my patience isn't a good when the weather is bad so I tend to get quieter and DH will keep asking if I'm OK. The cats have also been sleeping more lately too.

We've had a great winter!! Lots of cold and snow here in the midwest... Illinois... Me and hubby and DS are loving all of the snow we've gotten and cold... we have a wood burner stove hubby keeps going for heat in our finished basement to help with heating costs.. he loves to chop wood by hand.. so we aren't complaining.. although I think the snow will be leaving us sometime in the next week of 2.. its supposed to have a warming trend.. but I guess its time.. it is the middle of February all ready. And the snow is looking all dirty!! :D :D :D
We haven't had a winter like this in awhile so its been great.. although we are in the minority.. most people are hating this winter..

We have had snow for 3 days now almost continuously. Some sleet also. making for lots of icy road. It took DS 1 1/2 hours to get home from work 20 miles on Wednesday at noon . That was on a main highway most of the way also. Our street in front of my home is still covered in snow and ice. with 2 sets of tracks that do not go all the way through the snow and ice. Most everything is at a standstill, and most everyone is staying at home except for emergency personnel and also media personnel. Most all of them have 4WD vehicles. My front yard measures 8 1/2 inches on my yardstick, and that is pushing it thru 1 layer of ice about midway thru . That was the sleet late yesterday afternoon. The sun is almost breaking thru rigfht now. Schools have 4 days to make up because there will be no school tomorrow either. Thank goodness we have plenty of food in the house. Our power has blinked off once, but came right back. That is what scares me because my home is total electric and I do not have a fireplace. We have been lucky so far. Stay warm and cozy everyone.

I'm one of those old pharts that still have dial-up and a dumb phone so I do rely on the scroll but thankfully our station has it down to an ignorable size.
I'm sick of hibernating! No heat in my fabric room and the radiator shut off in the sewing room as it is the last of the steam heat run and I don't sew daily. I need to get Dad's house empty before spring but it is an hour away so we clear out here and go up there to clear out too then we are tired. :| Calgon take me awaaaaay!!

I cannot complain about the weather as we have had only one day of thin black ice on the roads. It's been cold but nothing like the rest of the country and we have had less than 1/2 inch of snow in the past year. I'm praying for those affected by the heavy snow and ice. My daughter is dealing with it in Washington, DC. However, at her young age, it's an adventure. I have just cautioned her not to drive in these conditions.

Little warmer today and the thaw has begun. So far, my street is still a mess, but DS waited til after 10 am and got out all right to go to work. The main roads are clear now so that is a releif. I am still inside. No mail or paper for 2 days now.. I am hoping will get both later today. My yard is still beautifully white and pretty to look at. I am warm, that is the main thing. and I have almost finished my latest James Patterson Mystery.. Its keeping me on edge to get to the finish.. LOL.

We've had more snow days this year than in any other year that I can remember. We're a rural district which means lots of country roads to plow and they just can't take the chance of the buses getting stuck. They've taken 2 days from Easter break and I think we've added 4 days to the end of the year. Luckily the original school calendar had us ending on June 13th so another week won't be too awfully bad. I'm just getting tired of being in the house. I think I'll take a run to walmart just to go somewhere today. We've been on the outskirts of the storms that have hit Philadelphia, PA so we haven't gotten as much snow as they have. My son lives just outside Atlantic City and they had rain yesterday, outside and in the family room. He is having a new roof put on today! I don't know why anyone would put a flat roof on an addition!

Libby, I forgot you were in the Charlotte area. Glad DS got home safely and that your power didn't stay off. We had about an inch of big fat fluffy snow before it changed to rain. Temps stayed above freezing too so it wasn't bad. Prayers for those who are in the storm ravaged areas.
Today the sun is out and it is nearly 60 out. Tomorrow---snow, rain, sleet. Oh, well I'm enjoying the sun today. Have been out in my garden pulling weeds I can reach without getting into the mud and picking up the ton of downed tree limbs/branches we've had this winter.
