Nov/Dec quilting projects

I just realized we don't have a Nov thread, and since I just discovered how to make a disappearing 9 patch I thought I'd start one and we can run it into December. My quilt guild is going to make one for a charity quilt next month and I had to come up with a 9 patch made up of 9 different fabrics for a kids quilt. So I started poking through my stash and next thing I've made 3 quilt tops for baby quilts. I figured out the disappearing 9 patch with help from a tutorial on the internet and I love it! They are so simple to make and look so complicated! I now have 5 quilts laying on the floor all pinned and sandwiched and needing quilting, but I'm on such a roll I hate to take time out to quilt! Plus I learned the neatest trick for backings when your back is just a bit too short. You use up extra quilt squares in a row and it looks great. As soon as I get one finished, I'll post a picture to show you what I mean.

Laura, I love the disappearing 9 patch...but haven't made one yet. I went to a quilt show and there was a lady that did a short demo on how it works. Then I came home and googled and found all kinds of ideas. The pattern looks totally different depending on where you place the fabrics. When my aunt had cancer, since my quilting buddy was retired I gave her some fabrics and she made one for my aunt and hand quilted it. I'll try to find a pic. Guess this will be on my list of quilts to make for VCQ... once I officially join...LOL

thanks for the idea of a new pattern! I spoke with our youth pastor last week and we will be sending our quilts with the youth group this summer when they go to Appalachia on their missions trip. They said it is a very poor area and since its in the mountains it does get cold there. Sounds like a perfect fit for the quilty ladies and the youth as pastor was looking for a way to get the kids to interact with adults. He is going to have them come work with us to help put the quilts together. Thats good because we usually tie our charity quilts and can use all the help we can get. If we decide to machine quilt them, the kids can always help cut batting and backing.

What a great idea to get the kids involved! I've been going crazy today cutting out squares from all my novelty fabric to make disappearing 9 patch quilts. Tomorrow I hope to get 2 more quilts quilted, then just the large one left to do. I did cheat and machine sew on the binding both sides, not my favorite way to do it, and I do struggle with it, but it is quicker.

I found a free pattern for a tree skirt on the internet by Darlene Zimmerman whose work I do like. Well, this thing has been a nightmare. It calls for her 'corner triangle' tool which I don't have and there are a number of errors in the pattern. i have ripped out and resewn and adjusted and swore and recut so much, at least now I think I have the pattern figured out. It's not that difficult, it's Ohio stars, but the instructions are miniscule and the measurements incorrect. But it's almost done and I will be happy with it. So much for free patterns that aren't written correctly.

I just finished a flannel rag quilt for a Christmas gift. I would post a picture but it is in the washer right now, ragging itself. Hopefully it will be finished in the dryer before I have to leave for work. Next project is cloth books for the little ones. I buy at least 4 panels of each book when I can find them, one for DS's family, one to put away for DD's future family and 2 to sell. They pay for themselves that way.

I have a quilt top finished and will be layering that tonight at my quilt group at church. Hopefully it will be finished in time to give as a Christmas gift for the teachers I work with. I can get away with one gift as they are an engaged couple. I work mostly with the guy and do 2 periods a day with the girl. When the quilt is finished I'll post in Stash Challenge as it is completely from stash! Yippee!!

Started a train quilt for a coworker who is due in March. Was going to do an icecream quilt, but she's having a boy and my girlfriend and I came up with such a cute idea. I have the front pretty much pieced, and have to start sewing down some of the applique so I can get into the little stuff. It's a lot of fun to create this quilt. Then I will work on DD's hockey quilt. I decided to do curved edges then realized that's going to be tricky to put a border on, so I found directions for drunkard's path and will adapt that. I do need to get at my storm at sea quilt, but the two baby quilts are way more fun.

I finished my 2 quilting Christmas projects last night. Both are very simple but large. Will get pictures this week sometime before I wrap them. One is for my brother and it's close to queen size. The other one is for my daughter and it is king comforter size so that she can use it with a dust ruffle. I'm pretty pleased with how they turn out. Probably will wait to post pictures after Christmas because I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise. I already have a quilt project in mind and I'm thinking of starting an applique wall hanging project. I'm ready for the mad rush for Christmas to be behind me.
