Applique BOM Quilt Top Done

New postby HeyJudee on Mon May 07, 2012 10:36 am

This BOM (block of the month) has been a UFO for about 5 or 6 years ( :?: :?: :?:)

I finished the last block sometime in January. I had missed the last class of the BOM at a LQS and have had the instructions...but no mojo to get it done until now. I mentioned in my Triangle Madness post that I needed more whites & creams to use in piecing that quilt. Well I decided to finish putting this top together so that I could free up the leftovers for use in Triangle Madness. This morning I just finished sewing on the piano key borders.

Here's a pic... Now I just need to get a backing and will be using the same fabric as in the sashing for the binding.

Judy, I really like this top. I haven't done a BOM as yet. Are the blocks applique or printed? I love the 'country colours' ;) Take care.

Gorgeous, Judy. I'd almost call the colors southwestern. Love the floral blocks. Fine work once again, my dear.

All the blocks are applique except for the crazy patch which was foundation pieced. They are done with different techniques...hand applique, machine applique, with freezer paper templates, with fusible web, etc. The lady who designed the blocks had EQ and used some of the blocks directly from that software....like the snowman & bear blocks. I changed up the bear block by adding the balloons and couching some yarn for the strings. And the poppy block was my own design as I didn't like the poppy block that she designed. And the woven basket (block on on right side) was taken from an applique magazine that I had seen. I liked that basket better than the one she had suggested. I usually try to do something different in the blocks...trying to make it my own.

Judy, I neglected to say that the poppy is my favorite. It's true.

Very pretty, but the crazy patch looks out of place.

Pretty top Judy, and I do agree with Gina about the crazy patch. But it's still very pretty.

I specially like and admire the Celtic Knot. I personally know what a headache one of those can be from personal experience. That is one class I will never forget.. LOL The quilt is beautiful..

I agree about the crazy patch not really being applique...but I didn't want to have to make a substitute block so just kept it. Another issue I had was with the poppy block...that's the only block that doesn't have any of the focus fabric. I tried to think of different ways I could add a piece...but didn't come up with anything I liked. And I just wanted to get it done... so put everything together as is. At least it's no longer a UFO top...

And yes Libby...celtic knots can be a pain to do...but I actually liked doing this one. Of course, it's the only one I've done. If I did another I might just change my mind about them... ;)
