Where to sell?

New postby npl on Mon Sep 15, 2008 10:45 am

Trying to figure out where to sell my products. Although my business name implies many crafts, right now I'm working exclusively in fabric - bags, baby blankets and related gifts, embroidered household items (kitchen towels, etc) and possibly some products for nurturing mamas (mama cloth and stuff).
I originally planned on custom orders and craft shows, but that isn't bringing in the business right now, and I need to reach a bigger market.
Where should I look -Etsy, HyenaCart, consignment, my own website store, all of the aboce?

What worked for you?

Thanks!

please don't try to sell here. This is not a business place, this is a forum--we don't typically buy and sell things here! With the number of posts you have it appears that you may be attempting to start to sell here and we just don't allow that or want that or anything--for many of us this is the escape from that.

I'm very sorry if this came across as an attempt to sell on the forum. It most definitely was not.
I had seen previous threads about consignment stores and online sites such as ebay and etsy.
I was just trying to ask if anyone had any experiences to share.
If this was an inappropriate question to pose in this forum, please remove my post, and I will not ask business-related questions again.
I apologise if I misunderstood the purpose of this section of the forum,

Try http://www.etsy.com or http://www.blujay.com/

both are online shop providers....

Thanks Judy, just give me another site where I can buy used books with very reasonable prices and shipping! I'm addicted to books almost as much as I am to sewing.

Naomi, For the record, I didn't see your post that way at all. Welcome to our forum. I've never sold online before but a lot of women have success with Etsy and Ebay from what I've heard. My dh's secretary buys from them all the time and lately she's been asking me if I can reproduce things for her that she sees there.

Please stick around and let us know what you decide to do and how successful you are and just socialize. Jen really is nice. Really. ;)

Welcome.

Naomi, no worries! You are using this forum for its intended purpose. I created the Sewing/Quilting Businesses forum to give people a place to ask questions about running a craft-related business, and that is just what you did. So, you have the official "OK." :D Carry on!

Naomi, I mostly sew for the joy of it.. Making gifts and clothing for friends and relatives.. Not to their order, just what I want to make when I want to make it.. Sometimes, I will create items for a craft sale or bazaar.. My neice urges me to sell on E-bay, but that is too much trouble.. I guess I'm not hungry enough for that.. I am retired and on a fixed income, but I get by ok , so I don't want the hassle of sewing to please other people. That takes all the fun out of it.. A couple of the girls on here sell on that Etsy thing, I think.. Ribbon barrettes, etc.. I sell at a Sr Center bazaar in the fall, and my sister's church has a big craft sale and I have done pretty well there..

Thanks Kaitlin, for reassuring me!
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions for online places. It's a big leap, with some expenditure of time and money to divert my plan from craft fairs to online, but I think I just need to take the plunge and give it a try!

Hi Naomi, welcome to the group. Several of my friends have had a lot of luck using Etsy to sell their craft products as I think that is what it was created for people to do. Ebay has such a wide variety of things and rules that I tend to stay away from it. One of my friends sells things thru word of mouth. She is able to generate enough income to keep her family going. I do think she is chained to her sewing machine though. :D What types of things do you sell? Do you draft your own patterns or take custom orders? I'm just the curious type.
Marty ;)
