Tab top wall hanging questions

New postby kjh9835 on Fri Oct 05, 2012 11:52 am

I am working on a Christmas wall hanging, almost finished with the hand quilting. I would like to make it with tab top tabs along the top edge with buttons for decoration only since I have added buttons to the actual design.

Since I am binding it, I guess I just sew the tabs on after I add the binding because I don't see any other way to put them between the layers because of the binding. I have two panels and this is just the first one, I am going to do the 2nd one but will quilt it a little differently.

Do all the buttons need to be the same except for color? I used 3/4" four hole buttons in red and green on the design but only have two hole buttons in 3/4" tan for the top unless I go back to the store.

Since the buttonholes will be on the back of the wall hanging, the tan buttons should work. It depends on how wide the hanging is as to how many tabs you will need. I would space them 6 inches apart for a professional look.

There aren't any buttonholes so to speak as I will sew the loops to the panel and add the buttons for decoration. My kitchen curtains (already here) are made that way and I like that look better than small rings sewn on the back for hanging.

In that case, I would make sure that the buttons matched for the best look.

Next time you can sew the binding and the tabs on together at the same time. You sew the tabs on at the back, do the binding, then when you turn the binding over you also fold the tabs up so they are coming up behind the hanging, they can be tacked along the top of the binding to keep them upright. The other option is a sleeve across the back then you don't see the pole or rod at all, it is hidden behind the hanging. Make sense?

I have also see where you cut squares, fold them into triangles and sew those into the corners of the top of the hanging at the back, and then do your binding as normal. Then you can stick the rod in to the corners made by the triangles at the back, does that make sense??

I can post a pic when I get home.
