Knitting vs Crocheting

How do you decide whether knitting or crocheting is best for a particular project? For me, it always comes down to a coin toss, but I'd like to hear if any of you have certain criteria. For example, a hat and scarf: Knit or crochet, and why?

The only knitting I do is by machine so I knit if I am in a hurry. Those babies can really crank out the stitches. Also if I want a solid fabric like finish I knit. Most of my crocheting has holes in it. If I want texture (ie dishclothes) I crochet. Most of the time I crochet to keep my hands busy while watching TV.

If I want something to be warm and to drape nicely in a solid fabric I knit. I know you can crochet solid fabric but it uses so much more yarn than knitting does plus it doesn't drape well, so if the amount of yarn needed is a concern go with knitting. If it is for babies I knit as their little fingers get caught in the crochet sweaters, hats and blankets. I enjoy doing both and don't feel like one is faster than the other. I have noticed that knitting doesn't bother my hands as much as crocheting does. Anyone else find that?

Crochet makes me cross - knitting every time - I can get much more texture and pattern and colour in knitting.

I stopped sewing for Christmas gifts over a week ago. Now as of yesterday I have another ruffled scarf underway for My GrD. I hope I get it finished by Monday PM. That is when we are getting together at DS home for our Christmas gathering.. Then on Tuesday I will visit my Brother's home and possibly my Sister, if she is home..LOL She's the gadabout.

I learned how to knit a long time ago.. just basic.. like a straight afghan type thing or scarf nothing to complicated and about 6 months or so ago decided to crochet rugs from fabric scraps. Now I have decided to help at church and knit some prayer shawls or lap robes. I don't do anything fancy though.. no socks or hats or sweaters though.
