Ever heard of this?

New postby sewingrandma on Mon Aug 22, 2016 10:30 am

Abby going to day care was short lived last week, she went only 2 days. I was only supposed to get her 2 days a week but it looks like I'll have her all week this week. No sewing for me this week! On one of the days I was supposed to have her last week she ran a temperature of 103 and I could tell didn't feel well. Saturday DD called to tell us they had Abby at the Children's Urgent Care. She has Hand, Mouth, and Foot disease. Think a bad case of chicken pox but only in the mouth, hands, feet and diaper area! She is covered in blisters in those areas, it hurts for her to walk and eat. She's only eaten macaroni and cheese and graham crackers so far today and is drinking fluids well. She is in good spirits so I'm thankful for that.

Yes, that is one of the pitfalls of daycare. So sorry that it happened to Abby. Hope she feels better soon and she will take longer naps so you can get some sewing in.

We all knew Abby was going to catch colds and such once she started daycare as they are a fount of germs but didn't expect it so soon or anything like this. I had never heard of hand, mouth, and foot disease.

It's fairly common in young children especially those in day care. It's a virus that is spread thru lack of hygiene, not proper cleansing when changing a diaper, putting toys in mouth after other children have played with them. It is very contagious. It should be reported to Abby's pediatrician and the day care center should send out a notice to all parents about the infection. It starts with a mild fever and then a rash develops on their hands and soles of their feet ultimately ending up with sores in the mouth and in the genital area. It is quite painful. Ordinarily, it lasts about a week to 10 days if treated immediately. Hope this helps.

My Mom ran her own Day Care center for years, and I have never heard of this ailment before. Mom sure never had any of it at Alices Wonderland..I helped her there an awful lot over the years, but we did not have that problem. Hope Abby is better soon..

Libby, your mom probably practiced excellent hygiene habits ... Here is what WebMD has to say about this ... http://www.webmd.com/children/guide/han ... overview#1.

Libby, Abby is finally feeling better. The blisters are starting to dry up/reabsorb. Yesterday she started to eat better and today she cleaned her plate for breakfast and lunch. Not as whiny either.
