Design wall

I am still redesigning my new sewing space...fourth time since january that I re organized everything. Just trying to get the flow right...anyway, I realized that I need a design wall as I have been quilting more and more...any ideas for making one that you are really happy wwith?? thanks, Paula

Don't have any ideas for a wall but wanted to mention what they have in the classroom where I've been taking classes. They do have a design wall but I've not inspected it to see how it's done.

They also have large ironing tables that are probably 30" by 60" or so. They are made similiar to mine but on a smaller scale (mine is 4'x8', padded plywood screwed to a small conference type table). They have basically same thing but used old ironing boards for the base and are placed against a wall. I'm not sure how steady they are if they would be moved away from a wall due to size/weight of the top on top of an ironing board. Since I used the small conference table, mine can be moved away from the corner where I have it in case I need to get to the back side when taping down the backing of a quilt. I want to put casters on it but haven't done that yet.

Might want to check YouTube for a quilt basting wall/design wall to see if there's anything there. My internet is too slow or I'd check for you.

I purchased a sheet of foam-insulation (odd size 30" x 8') and asked the guy to cut it in half (two 30" x 4' pieces).
When I got home, I duct-taped two long sides together like a hinge, and covered with plain white flannel.
It folds up behind a door when not in use.

I've also seen a hanging quilt rack (or curtain rod) hung over a flannel design wall with a quilt that pulls to the side when you need the design wall exposed. You use curtain rings with clips to hang the quilt. That's what I've been planning to do eventually. For now I just have a piece of flannel hanging on the wall under a shelf.

I have what Lis has but I nailed mine to a wall so it's there all the time, and I vacumn it when it gets too many threads on it. Also heard of people using a flannel backed tablecloth as one. I have 3x4 plywood piece that I have put one layer of batting and a cotton cover stapled on for quilting. It sits on 2 ironing boards, then when I need the ironing board I just lean the plywood board against a wall. It also doubles as a small design board for baby quilts and other small stuff. I didn't put thick padding in as I found I get a better press with a firmer surface.

Well, without wanting to spend big moolah on a design wall I simply hung up a piece of batting and voila! Quilt blocks galore stay where you position them.
It's portable, lightweight, and further usable! In a pinch you can also use the back of a flannel tablecloth but the batting works better.
