I think I might get myself into trouble but I am going to attempt to make a rag quilt for the new baby being born the end of March. I have a lot of small pieces of sports & monkey flannel That I can use up.

I don't consider a rag quilt realy venturing to the dark side. I am not really quilting it is more like just sewing squares together.

I hate to admit it on here but I have made quite a few tied quilts in my past. & even did one for my grandson that was Echo quilted around all the shapes on the fabric to fit on his twin size bed. My Grandmother made some beautiful pieced quilts & I will never be in her league. I get bored with projects that take too long.

I am trying to decide 4" or 6" squares. (Cut 5" or 7") I want the quilt to end up around wide 42"-44"& thinking 50ish long.
If it is not to difficult I might make a girl one also for another DD's friend who's baby is due in April & my great niece who is having a girl in June. But I will get through the one boy one first.

I cut a lot of squares today.
Cut an old flannel sheet for the center. & I have 87 other squares in assorted sports/ boy /solids. I have bowing, Basketball,2 different baseball, hockey, Monkeys, frogs, I love Grandma, & Hot wheels prints plus some light blue, tan, cream & a mottled blue solid. I need to go to Jo Ann's tomorrow to return the bobbins I bought that say they will fit my viking but don't (will stop @ the dealer & get the right ones) I need some football & Michigan State Flannel (has anyone ever mixed regular cotton in if I can't find the flannel?) I cut the squares 7" I am thinking I will do 7 across & 9 down
For a finished size of 42" X 54". I want it big enough to not grow out of right away. Do you think I should add 1 more row across for 48"?

The regular cotton won't fray up as nice as the flannel but it could work. It also probably won't shrink as much when washing as well.

Thanks Laura! I am going to look for flannel but If I don't find it I may put a few squares of Cotton Michigan state fabric in to please the Dad.
