I usually hand sew the inside edge down, makes a really nice clean professional look. If I am going to edge stitch with the machine, I do that when I serge the collar on, flip everything then take the machine and edge stitch down. I should add, when I serge the collar to the shirt, I do it with no seam allowance, meaning I cut the whole seam allowance off with the serger so I just have a 1/4" serged seam on the neckline. Clear as mud right?

Re: Button hole color

New postby temom on Sat Jul 21, 2012 5:54 pm

I am almost finished with dd's shirt. The collar is a little funky, and I don't know why, but it doesn't show so I'm not going to redo it.
When I sewed up the sides, I completely missed that there were supposed to be slits, but dd doesn't care, and she has plenty of room without them.
This afternoon we did a JoAnn run for buttons, and here is a pic of the buttons she chose with the shirt. I used pink thread to sew the shirt, but am wondering if I should use pink or purple for the button holes. If I go with purple, should I match thread color with the buttons or the purple on the shirt, or what?

I vote for purple thread that matches the buttons.

I'm gonna go with purple that matches the purple in the shirt. it won't really show much anyway. That is unless you did any top stitching in pink. Then I would make the button holes in the same color.

I would match the purple of the buttons. But there are no rules here. I'd say do whatever dd wants.

Well, it is finished. The pic isn't very good, and in real life when the shirt is distributed properly, the sleeves are the same length. Sorry for the blur factor. If I can get a better pic tomorrow (outside), I'll put it up.
We went through 4 colors of purple thread for the button holes that we thought looked great, but when we stitched it up, it didn't look good. So dd came up with a color that looked good, and it was almost mauve.

I want to make another one, and figure out how to do the collar without it being funky. I will also go with the slits in the sides, and make it a little longer, as the girls wear their shirts long! (or,short, but not in this family!)

One thing that I can't figure out - how to get the tracing paper marks off the fabric? I have one mark on the front of the shirt I can't get out, but I haven't thrown it in the washer yet.

Edited to change to a better, well lit, and prettier picture! :D
