Project Runway Junior

New postby MartySews2 on Sat Apr 09, 2016 2:58 pm

Had the privilege of working with a 16 yr old who has applied to be on Project Runway Junior. She has taken art lessons at Memphis College of Art and knows something about draping fabric on her mannequin. However, she knows little to nothing about garment construction. Her mom found out about the American Sewing Guild and called me for help. I met with her and her mom this afternoon and set them up with a sewing instructor closer to their home. I just don't have time to teach her the construction skills that she needs to compete. However, it was a fun afternoon and her ideas, drawing skills, and sketches were wonderful. I also helped the mom in making a weighted blanket for her autistic son. I just love how sewing is going from one generation to the next. I truly hope that this young girl will make it in the design world which can be ruthless and competitive.

Marty, I loved reading this. I do hope the mother will keep you updated on the childs progress. I am interested in the weighted blanket construction. Would you tell us about it. One of our doctors at work has an autistic son. I would love to gift the man with one of the weighted blankets. I have encouraged him to get a service dog for the son but do not think he has moved forward with thee idea. It is such a lonely world for the parents and caregivers for an out of control autistic child. Theblanket would be a great way to reach out.

Lindy, the blanket is actually 3 layers of fabric ... One layer is fleece, another layer is batting, and the third layer is a quilting cotton fabric. The 3 layers are being sewn together using the sew, turn and flip method. Then she will sew channels across the fabric (not exactly quilting but similar). She will make pockets on strategic parts of the blanket that will be filled with weighted beads. We are working on this together but she may have it finished when I see her next. That is about all there is to it. She is making decisions on it as she goes.
