Singer Featherweight Problems

New postby optimo1818 on Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:37 pm

Hey I am definitely a beginner in sewing, although I have used a machine before. I'm new here and had a question about my old singer featherweight, but wasn't sure whether to post here or under Sewing Machines, so I'm doing both. Basically the thread keeps getting tangled when the needle tries to pull up the bobbin thread, and I'm not sure if I'm threading the bobbin or what. But since my machine's so old, I can't look it up in the instruction book because it's all molded. Does anyone know of a downloadable instruction booklet for an old singer featherweight? Not sure what model, but it's one of the black ones with gold trim/decoration. Any tips or advice would be great! Thanks!

Jenny at this site can point you the correct dirrection.

I also seem to remember going to the Singer web sight and browsing for info on vintage machines and getting the info on vintage machines.

Hi Moriah, with the serial number, I think that you can download a manual from the Singer website. If you can't find one there, go to http://www.sewing-machine-manuals.com & you can order one. It sounds like your bobbin is not properly seated in the bobbin case. Is yours a side loading bobbin or is it loaded from the front or on the top? I don't have a featherweight but I have used one in the past, it just wasn't mine. I don't remember where the bobbin was located.

One basic thing when you have trouble with the bobbin or with tension -- always thread the machine (or at least the tension disks) with the presser foot up.

Hi Moriah, I just recently had a very similar issue with my Featherweight 221. If you have recently removed the throat plate to clean the feed dogs, make sure you have the bobbin housing "tooth" turned up when you replace the plate. I didn't know about that and it made a HUGE difference! I thought I'd have to take it for service, but was glad someone here told me what to do. I have a manual I can scan and email to you and I'll point out what I'm talking about. PM me your email info and I'll do it tonight when I'm at home.

I went looking for the page that helped me and found this link. Click on it and scroll down and you will see what I'm talking about when you reinsert the bobbin case.

Good luck!
