Sequinned Knits

New postby DedicatedMom on Thu Feb 27, 2014 8:40 am

I need some help. I have tried everything I know of to create a seam in a sequinned knit fabric. Stiches are continually skipped. I tried easing the tension, but stitches are still skipped and the seam is way too loose afterwards. I have had this same issue on my regular sewing machine as well as on my serger. I have gone so far as to switch my needles as well. Does anyone have some advice or tricks they'd be willing to share?

I wish I had some help for you, but in my 65 plus years of sewing, I have never sewed on sequined fabric. I would assume the sequins are causing the problem. is there a way to remove them from the seam allowance without causing more to fall off?? That is what I remember from reading something about that years ago. I hope someone on here will be able to help you.

Unfortunately, these sequins are stuck on pretty tight. They are small too, so there are a lot of them. I've gotten so frustrated with the fabric that I've taken a break from that particular project. When I pick it back up I might try to incorporate a tear-away stabilizer. Maybe that will help. At least i hope it will.

Hi Dedicated Mom, have you tried using a sequin/beading foot with your serger? That's what I use when I'm working on sequin fabric especially when the sequins come off at the seam allowance.

I'll have to try that! Now to find my beading foot at the bottom of my sewing basket.
