My serger is sick ...

On this past Saturday, I allowed one of my adult students use my Babylock Eclipse DX serger to hem some napkins that she wanted to make. She is a very basic beginner who is taking lessons with her 2 young daughters. I have 3 other adult students, too. I set my serger up for a narrow rolled hem, showed her how to serge the edge and turn a corner. She practiced a little bit and I told her to go ahead and make her napkins. I turned to another student to help them and she called for help. When I went back to where she was using my serger, I found that she had failed to lower the presser foot when turning the corner. The stitching was a mess and she had yanked on the fabric and the thread causing the lower looper thread to break inside the tube. I went to re-thread my serger and there is a blockage in the lower looper tube. I will have to take my serger to my dealer tomorrow to get it repaired. It will cost approximately $150 according to my dealer when I talked to him on the phone today. Hopefully, my student will volunteer to cover the cost of the repair but I'm not planning on it. Hubby says "no good deed goes unpunished". Hard lesson to learn ... from now on, I will suggest that students buy their own serger. That way, they will be responsible for any damage done. I saw on Amazon today that the Brother 1034D is on sale for under $200. I'm going to recommend that serger to her. Thanks for letting me vent.

It is frustrating, Marty. Maybe a serger like that might be good to demonstrate on so you keep the good one tucked away. When I have quilters over I get out my yard sale finds to use.

I bought my Eclipse DX as a class machine because it is easy to change threads and get it going with minimal fuss. I've been using it as such since 2010 without any problems until now. I will just suggest that the students (they are not destitute) buy their own serger and become comfortable using it.

My dealer repaired my serger at no charge. I am so thankful so I bought some embroidery thread, sewing thread, needles, and a new wire for my serger. It came to about $60 so I felt that was a fair deal as they had taken my serger apart while I waited and fixed it right away. It had some thread in the lower looper tube. I am very thankful that I have such a great dealer.

Yes, I do shop with them throughout the year. I buy all of my embroidery thread and stabilizer from them and I have bought/traded almost 10 machines from them over the past 12 yrs plus presser feet for each of my machines. Also, I send customers to them. We've had a good working relationship.
