broken needle

Anyone ever have a machine needle break in 3 parts and one of them hit you in the face? It stung but didn't break the skin. I wear glass with safety lenses so I don't worry about my eyes. Don't know how it happened either and I was using the right size needle for what I was making and wasn't pulling the fabric thru, plus it was my old standby brand-Schmetz. The eye of the needle stayed threaded and miracle of miracle I found the third piece on the floor. Sure wouldn't want to end up with it my foot as I generally sew barefoot. This type of break was new to me.

Was this a titanium needle by Schmetz? I have heard this happening with titanium needles as they shatter easily. Am so glad that you were not hurt any worse. I would report this to Schmetz and ask if this is a common occurrence.
