Singer 9117 Sewing Machine

Just wanted to give a heads up to the Singer 9117 model. Just got this machine and am a beginner sewer. If anyone happens to acquire this model there is a few things you should know. It is a older model but not quit sure how old. The main reason why I'm posting this is that you will have to order your bobbins on line usually. They didn't even have them at Joann's. The Viking center within Joann's said they would have to be a special order. The bobbins are easy to find on line. The part number for them is #312956 and they have a special metal part in the middle of the bobbin that's what makes them special. Somehow that metal part works with the bobbin case on this model 9117. This bobbin is used also in the following Singer machines : 2010, 4613, 4617, 4623, 4663, 6234, 6235, 6250, 6251, 6267, 6268, 7000, 7005, 7027, 7037, 7043, 7050, 7060, 9113, 9117, 9124, 9133, 9137, 9143, 9217, 9224, 9240 & 9417 . Also learning you have to thread the bobbin from within the bobbin case as opposed to on top of your machine like the newer models. So far this is what I've come across and just wanted to share. If I find anything else new about this model that I think is different and a new user should know I will post it.

I HATE when manufacturers do that! I have a Viking that is my main machine and the specific things you have to do for it make me mad. They've got you and they know it!!!

Posting these things is a great idea. Someone with the same machine or considering it will enter the model # in the search box and learn some good stuff!

Tell me about it Who would've thought. So Singer and Viking do that kind of thing, geeez. We sewers need to stick together!

Janome does that too. I have to get bobbins directly from them. The closest Janome dealer closed about 18 months ago. Grrr!

I'm lucky with my Brothers, they are pretty generic. I do have to get special needles for my coverstitch and it's a Janome! Good info though Dee, I had been looking at a Singer that was at a liquidation place, and now I should go check about the needles and bobbins before deciding if I want to buy it or not.

Lennie and Dee this is for you spoecially.. I don't know about Viking, but I do know about Singer. My 221 Featherweight (made in 1949-1954) has the bobbin that you have to thread before inserting in the machine. In those days all Singers had that kind of bobbin and bobbin Case. Dee if your machine is metal and not plastic, it might be older than you think..This is just a thought. I have no experience with modern day Singers except the one DS bought for DGD for Christmas several years ago at Target for $69. bucks at a black Friday sale. I taught her how to sew on it, and it uses class 15 bobbins that are plastic,..
For the person with a Janome, if you have a Hancocks near you they are now carrying bobbins that fit Janome. The house brand, and then they have the Janome brand. Guess which ones I bought because of the price. And they work great.. I came home and filled one immediately and tested it, and its great..

That shows a nice variety of fancy stitches.. I like that.. My Janome makes a lot of those and I really like using them. That looks like a really nice machine, Dee. It is really from today, you can tell by all the stitches it can make. Of course being a 40's model, my Featherweight 221 is only a straight stitch machine. But I do have the buttonhole attachment so I can also make buttonholes when I use it. I like it for taking to classes, because the case is easy to carry back and forth. My Janome is too heavy to lug back and forth..

Singers can be dated from their serial #'s if you go to their site. Did you try that, Dee? That's how I found out my old Singer 401A is from 1958.

Thanks Lennie! I found the SN#. But when I go to Singer it just states it's from 1900. How can I narrow down the year? Do you know?
