A new addition

New postby kaitlinnegan on Thu Jan 01, 2015 10:33 pm

Hi all, and happy New Year!

My trusty sewing machine of about 9 years has died, and I just received my replacement. I picked out the Singer 4432, billed as a "heavy duty" and "high speed" machine. So far it seems to handle heavy denim pretty well, but I haven't done a whole lot with it. I really wanted a basic, mechanical machine with only a few "extras" (one step buttonhole, drop in bobbin, etc). I hardly used the decorative stitches on my old machine, but this one has plenty of those too. It has adjustable presser foot pressure, which seems like a nice feature. I haven't sewn much on knits with it yet, and as you all know this is key for me! I'm planning to make a knit top this week, so I should have a chance to test it out.

Kaitlin, I am excited about your new machine. I have looked at those off and on for years and wondered if one would make a good grandchild gift.
Enjoy getting to know her.

How fun it is to get a new machine ... I think that you will love her a lot. Can't wait to see what you make. I'm giving my daughter the task of removing a collar from a top that I started in October so that I can fix and wear it. My next machine (hopefully in a few years) will be a 10 needle embroidery machine.

Congratulations, on a new machine. I know I am happy with my one and only Singer. It has been in my posession for 57 years now and still going strong. Still makes the best buttonholes in the world.. My sons call her "Old Fairhful" and have called her that for more than 30 years now. A friend bought one of the heavy duty singers recently and loves it. I love my Janome, but if my Singer had a zigzag stitch, I might consider it to be my Number 1 instead of 2nd choice. I do too many knits to be limited to straight stitch.

Keep us posted on your new machine. I think I saw this in the Vermont Country Store catalog! Libby, hang on to your Singer, they don't make them like they used to.

Piney, every once in a while my DS in Stanley will e-mail me an e-bay link to check .. It is always a Singer 221 Featherweight and he will say, Old Faithful is in a lot better shape than this one and look at what it is going for ! ! I suppose when I am gone, there will be some discussions on who gets custody of Old Faithful. The rest of my machines do not matter to them.. LOL

I saw a featherweight without any extras and it was on sale for over $400.

A Singer was my first machine with the drop in cams for decorative stitching and I still miss that machine. I had a special sewing table for it and everything. I made a lot of things with that machine. When I gave it up, that is when I found this group way back when and when I got into machine embroidery, and got my first sewing/embroidery machine. Ah.... so many memories... :D :D :D
