8 1/2 is played at our house almost every family dinner night. No one will play scrabble because for some reason none of my kids can spell. My Mom & Dad used to play it all the time.

Spelling and words are not my strong point, so I don't like scrabble. I LOVELOVELOVE gin rummy. I don't think I have played any of the other games.

I've only heard of Scrabble and Gin Rummy too. I LOVE Scrabble. Love it! Dd and I play when we can. Dh doesn't like it so much. Played lots and lots of gin over the years too. And Jan, I haven't heard of the others either so it's not just you being a foreigner..........

I got out the other games so I can give a quick description

Swap: The Swift Swappin' Switchin' Slappin' Card Game. You have to try to get rid of all your cards by matching colors but you might have to swap hands with another player or race to slap the pile or if a super swap is played everyone has to swap hands. It has been a while since we played this one. maybe I will take it to the next family dinner.

Ziggity: A Cranium game. They are games that make you use your brain. There are 4 different catagories of cards, Creative Cat you have to complete a 3 piece puzzle on one corner of the card to play them, Star Performer You have to match musical instraments to play, Data Head you have to add cards to 11 to play, Word Worm Use your cards to spell a word.There is also a free card that can be combined with any of the other cards to complete a play. These games are great for family game nights

8 1/2: This game is really simple but has lots of rules. you play a card equal or higher than the one on the top of the pile unless a 5 is played then you have to play lower. You can play multiples of the same card if they are in your hand or if you have an 8 card & a 1/2 card you can play then together. a 1/2 can be played on anything except the 8 1/2 combo. there is also a ghost card that leaves the card the same or a 0 that can be played on any whole #. You can catch someone by playing the next whole # on a 1/2. If you get caught you take the cards & the person who caught you gets an extra turn. When you get rid of your stack then you have to play your 6 table cards. the top 3 that you can see you must play first then the bottom 3 you play blind. If you play a blind card that doesn't work then you must pick up the pile & play it from your hand before continuing with you table cards. You get points for going out & for having the least amout of cards in your "caught" pile. We made up new "ELY" Rules for scoring to make it more fun. Everyone gets points 1 for having the most cards & up form there depending on how many are playing. plus 2 bonus points for going out. It is really a simple game once you play a few times.
