New and need help

New postby eventer48 on Thu Jul 28, 2011 3:06 pm

Hello,
I have checked this board for help with Butterick 5529 (jackets) and did find one post from last December, but did not see any real help given. I am NOT a beginner, having sewn AND followed directions for years. This one has me stumped. Am attempting View E and have gotten thru step #3 (correctly, I think), but the first part of step #4 is confusing, to me anyway! For instance at the end of step #3 it says to turn and press. Is it still right side out at the beginning of step 4? It says to stitch as shown..I don't see what they are referring to. I have put this darn thing on my dressform and I see where I need to get, but not how to get there, with the seams enclosed between lining and outer layer.
I have walked away from this several times, each time returning with a new idea that does not work..."sigh".
Thank you so much for help

Cheryl (isn't it odd, the only other post about this pattern was another Cheryl, hmmm.)

Welcome, Cheryl. I went there and saw that too. There used to be instructions in PDF form on the pattern site but they're not doing that anymore I guess. It's hard to picture your dilemma. But the illustration should show in the following step whether the fabric is shaded (wrong side) or plain (right side). But if you've got experience sewing I'd say just wing it. You see what needs to be done, right? Go for it. I'm sure you can make it look just fine.

I don't know if this will be any help, but when I was making something recently, there seemed to be a step omitted. So I went back through the directions, reading everything for the other views. Sure enough, the directions were under a different view. Good luck!

It would help to know what you did in step three and what you would be doing in step 4. Then we can all discuss it and figure it out.

Thanks to all for your input. Theresa, I WILL go through the other views...maybe it will help. Thank you! I will try to post the directions and pic of my project later today. Then, maybe we can resolve this silly thing together. Trouble is it needs to be done by Monday...I thought it would be a 2hour or less project. haha!

Cheryl, Welcome to the site.. Sometimes I am guilty of 'operation foot in mouth' but here goes. I looked at the pattern on the Butterick website and read the description of that view. My GUESS is that at this point you are to turn it to the right side thru some small opening in a seam and then to finish , handstitch it closed, or if you choose to edgestitch the whole garment, then close the opening that way.. Now mind you, I am guessing here, but I have run across this a couple of times and that was what I had to do..I have not used this pattern, and I don't own it, so take this with a grain of salt..
Again , welcome to the site.

Well...I wrote to Butterick and got a very quick answer, with more detailed instructions and pictures. Haven't sewn it yet, but the trial pinning seems to work! I WILL post a pic when finished. Thanks again everyone..
