Gina, as long as the zipper ends up where it should on the top I'd do it the way they show.

They mean the metal stop ... at least that is how I interpret what you wrote.

I was hoping to see responses when I got home from fireworks, but I was really hoping they would agree. ;) I really want to get this outfit done. I guess I'll have to wait for tomorrow to see what the consensus says.

I agree with Barb, the actual zipper itself not the tape.

OK I am gonna measure from the stop. If that is wrong I can always rip it out and try again. If I go from the zipper tape and get it wrong I have to buy a whole new zipper because I have to cut off the excess on the top.

I put the metal stop at the large dot, and i always buy a zipper longer than what I need, as I tend to increase the crotch length at the front somewhat. And then I always have extra zipper at the top to cut off when I sew on the waistband. And it makes it way easier to sew in the zipper when the zipper pull is out of the way!!

Just be careful when sewing your zipper down on the outside that you don't hit the zipper stop or you'll bust a needle! Been there, done that a time or two.

Laura, buying a larger zipper is a great idea! You truly are our sewing guru. :D

The zipper is longer (I haven't cut it down yet) and there is no waistband on these shorts. There is a facing which I guess will stop the zipper but I am not seeing how. I am very afraid to cut the excess zipper off. I think I am going to set the shorts aside and work on the shirt and hat. They seem straightforward enough.

I decided to keep chugging away on the shorts. They are almost done and as far as I can tell 1/4 from the stop looks right. I still don't know about the top of the zipper but tomorrow should reveal that.
