I'm not sure about having a boy dog around. We've always had girls. My sister's male chihuahua likes to hike his leg up and pee.
We're getting a little attached to him, but I know his owner could still find him. I'm not against finding him another good furever home either. He's sweet but I don't think I could handle another one inside. It's already like we have two toddlers in the house.

From my experience, without professional dog training, most male dogs will just hike their leg & pee. I've always had male dogs & this is what they do. Most of mine have outgrown it & always tended to their business in the backyard or on a walk. However, I cannot walk Max & no one else in the house will. He'll pee on the floor if I'm not home but otherwise is fairly good about going outdoors in the backyard to tend to his business as long as I am on the back porch.

I am surprised no one has claimed him yet... like I said... If I was a dog person, I would take him.. he is so cute... but... I am a cat person...

i have had 2 male dogs and 2 female dogs and the males have NEVER lifted there legs in the house, it is a BAD habit. all my dogs had an an accident or 2 when they were babies and even the odd one when they were toddlers but NEVER have they lifted a leg in the house. our little brown pug that we have now, was crated for 18 hours a day when we got her at 5 months and the owners were mad that she was wetting her bed GET A CAT is all i wanted to say to them, ugh. Poor little Kala was in our house 2 minutes and she peed on the floor and i thought oh oh after that she and Winston were going outside every 30 minutes ALL day lol (Winston was wondering what the heck he was doing outside lol) and in the house she was attached to my hip, it took 2 weeks and we did it, not one accident in the house Kala is 4 now and if she has an accident (once maybe every 6 months if that) i have a little blanket in the kitchen that she will use, NEVER has she gone on the rugs yeah(i think it goes back to her thinking that its ok to go on the blanket as that is where she had to go when she was crated for HOURS as a baby Winston my boy Pug is 9 and never has had an accident in the house, and Lobes the cat, well she has a litter box tucked away in the corner because the Pugs think its their treat box eeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww lol

We got both Lulu and Lily while I was off work during the summer. That gave me time to potty train them. Lily will use a puppy pad if we're not home, but Lulu usually waits til she can go outside. Lily refuses to potty outside if it's dark. I don't blame her. A hawk could scoop her up pretty fast. We know someone that had that happen to their little chi not long ago.

Last night some friends were visiting us and mentioned that a friend of theirs has a white miniature schnauzer. My friend called him and he came over with his two little girls to see "Banjo". He asked if we wanted them to take him. His kids were jumping up and down in excitement. So little Banjo went home with them. They live a couple of miles from us, but I don't know them as well as our friends do. I told him if the dog's owners call me, I'll send them to him and he agreed. I miss the little guy, but I thinks he's happy having two little girls to play with. Their mom is a stay at home mom, so that made me feel better as well. She'll have more time than I will to spend training him. They will let him stay inside.
Now I worry about the original owners coming and taking him home and breaking these little girls' hearts. Their dad did tell them it might be temporary. They liked the name "Banjo" and wanted to call him that.
I wasn't sure what to do when the man offered to take him. Maybe a week wasn't long enough to try finding his owners. DH said if they really wanted him they would have been calling the animal shelter and area vet clinics looking for him.

Bama, I think a week is plenty. When we were in San Antonio and Drooliette found us she was at the vet at the one week point getting fixed. They had very strict stray animal laws in San Antonio. If you had a stray in your possession for 48 hours they were legally yours. We put signs up all over. The owner called us while she was having surgery and we did offer to give her back if they were willing to reimburse us the vet bill. They declined. I am guessing I saved her from a life of endless pregnancies.
I think your husband is correct, if they were really missing him they would be searching hi and low.
My last dog was a runner, I practically had all the vets and shelters on speed dial. I always had him back within 48 hours. The only time it took longer than that is when someone took him out of our fence and drove him down the highway and dumped him. He had bad separation anxiety and would make noise when I left him alone. I guess one of my neighbors got fed up with him (they even removed his collar so I couldn't find him). I never did figure out who. Now that I am remembering this you might want to widen your search a little. Maybe a 50 mile radius? It can't hurt.

Unless the owners are on vacation. but then whoever was in charge of him should be looking.

It does happen! On the news a few weeks ago there was the case of a little mixed something or other that was picked up by a hawk from a junk yard. The hawk dropped it on this lady's property while she and her grandson watched. Tiny puppy was bumped and bruised with some beak marks but turned out fine. I remember her quote verbatim: "When God drops a puppy out of the sky into your yard you keep it and take care of it." Good for her!

I've never had a problem with male dogs peeing in the house after they were housebroken or very, very old, btw.

Lori, I think you made the right decision. As long as the Dad told the two girls that it might be temporary they made a good decision to take him. Sounds like the pup is in good hands - better than where he came from probably. Let us know what happens - if you know.
