How about an Ipad or lap top. I hear that Microsoft has a new Ipad type computer. The same place I heard about the new microsoft tablet type computer also said desktops are on the way out. I bought a monster desktop last year (saved for some time to buy it) and It just akes up to much room but I felt I needed it to use dressmaking softwear to full advantage.

I have a wonderful ASUS laptop that I got from Best Buy last year that gives me no problems whatsoever. It has tons of memory space for my embroidery designs & works with Embird, my software. It weighs less than 5 pounds & is easily portable. I did buy the 2 yr Geek Squad contract with it. With an Ipad type device, they are limited as to what they can do. My daughter has one that she uses in class but still likes her Apple MacBook Pro for most things. Remember embroidery designs are primarily for MS Windows Programs. I went from XP to Windows 7 with little to no problems.

An iPad is not as versatile as a laptop. Me, I love a Mac. Works out of the box.

I would suggest a lap top. A full desktop system just takes up so much room. And of course, a lap top is portable. :D I have an Asus also, and really like it. Check out reviews on the exact model of any computer you consider though, as some models are better than others.

I think an IPad is great to have in addition to a lap top, but I wouldn't suggest it as a replacement. It just can't do all of the same things.

We have a desktop that is a few years old and I wish we would have gone for another laptop. I have an older laptop but my next one will be a Mac. There is just too much garbage junk that ends up on a PC. I don't know of one person with a Mac that has not loved it completely. Or had any trouble with it. Any computer you buy should be upgradeable, and lots of times the ones at Best Buy are not upgradeable at all. I prefer going to a computer store, where the people that work and own the store are computer geeks and not just working in a big box store while going to school. Just my opinion.

I must be the odd one. I do not like laptops. They are too small even with a larger screen, I used one for several months when our desktop was down but hated it. When I finally decided to call to get my desktop fixed, it was only $200 and I had waited and waited thinking it couldn't be fixed and we'd need to replace it :brick:

I have no advice as I'm pretty much computer dumb. Can't tell you a megabite from a gigabite or how much you need of what or how fast it needs to run so I'm at the mercy of the kids or now my computer fixing guy. He also builds them and said whenever I decide to replace mine, he can build me one cheaper and better than any box store b/c he will only put in/on what we need/use and won't waste memory on stuff we don't. He has a checklist of questions to ask and can look inside our current system and find out what's used/what isn't.

Our only problem now is not enough ventilation. I have an armoire that Joe built me and it's too hot inside the small area he allotted for the tower so I run a small clip fan until he has time to drill more/larger holes in the back.

dd22 has HP laptop with broken screen but can still use it as it's only about 1/4 of the screen down the left side. The glass is intact but there's liquid inside that's broken out of its whatever. $200 for a new screen so she's just going to get a new computer next year. dd19 has the older laptop (2008) that was originally dd22's. The charging port is broken and its over $200 to fix so again, she's just doing without which right now is no big deal since she's back home. I wonder if we could take the two of them and make one but haven't called yet since none of us has any money to do it now anyway.

we have a desktop and 2 laptops (plus my husband will bring his work one home) in the house and only 2 of us live here :D i use my lap top in my sewing room as that is what i have 99% of my embroidery software and what not on it, but i also added my embroidery software to my desktop that has a 23inch screen so when surfing on this one, i can check the designs via my embroidery software too. also i don't mind other people using the desktop (relatives) but NO ONE touches my lap top lol
