Adding pockets to RTW pants

Why do so many women's dress pants have no pockets? Or they have tiny ineffectual pseudo-pockets. I'm kicking myself for buying some well-fitting but pocketless dress pants at Macy's. I just can't really deal with no pockets. Have any of you added pockets to RTW? Any tips for how to approach it?

I have a teeny bit of fabric leftover from hemming them that could be used for welt pockets maybe, or pieced carefully for the visible part of the pocket facing. They are black, so I could attempt to find a similar black fabric, but you know how hard it is to match black fabrics.

Kaitlin, I've added pockets before. It depends on whether you want a side seam pocket or a welt pocket. For a welt pocket, I would look for a contrasting fabric in a small plaid or with some design to complement the black slacks. I wouldn't try to match it exactly. Any pant pattern with a pocket will do to make the pocket for your pants. I would use some muslin fabric for the actual pocket. Be sure to reinforce the edge of the pockets where the stress point is. Also, reinforce the pocket seam especially if you are prone to put keys in your pockets.
