Has anyone had a problem getting renewal notices for more than the actual subscription price?
I subscribe to VOGUE Patterns magazine, inside on the page where there is very small writing
giving all the legal mumbo jumbo with who the editor is and address to the office and what not,
there is subscription info. It says US $18.95 a year, 6 issues a year, $5.95 single copies. The little flyers that come out when
you flip thru the mag is a little postcard to subscribe saying "Save 45% off cover price 6 issues just $18.95"
Even on this little postcard there is a spot to check for "renewal" and a spot for acct number.

My problem is -is that I got a renewal envelope mailed to me for 1 year, 6 issues for $28.95.
The address it mails to is the same as the postcard...so it can't be a phony or third party renewal
service. Even the website http://www.voguepatterns.com says the sub price is $18.95. I think I will renew online
Buyers beware.

There are quite a few 3rd party companies that try to charge more than the actual magazine costs. Their offers look legit but are not. I report them to the Better Business Bureau & only subscribe directly from the magazine. A good example of this is Orbital Publishing which wants to charge $71.25 a year (think that is the amount) for Sew Beautiful magazine when the magazine is actually $18 a year. The price may have gone up though, as in my latest magazine, the price was $24.99.

This very topic was discussed on another forum I check. Of particular concern was that old time subscribers are being penalized while new subscribers get a 'deal'. In fairness it should be the opposite. I subscribed to Vogue Patterns for nearly 40 years before I cancelled it. I tried to overcome the better 'deal' for new subscribers one time by signing up as a new subscriber and ended up getting 2 copies for several issues which had the effect of making my new subscription 2 issues short. New subscriptions aren't clear as to when they start and some ongoing subscriptions not really clear when the last issue is. Some magazines have your expiry date on your mailing code, others not - so when renewal notices come in one is not sure exactly when subscription actually ends. I get frustrated by getting renew noticed months in advance, often after the first month :anxious:. I cancelled one magazine subscription just for this reason and told them that while they promoted 'green' they weren't practicing it by using up too much paper with so many mailings.

I welcome any answers!

DH has had that happen with his Popular Science magazine. They started sending renewals about 2 months after we renewed a 2 year subscription. I did notice that the earlier renewals had cheaper rates, but we did hold off this time and just renewed it again. Same thing for one of his motorcycle magazines. I have found my quilting magazines pretty good, and they are all available on line to reorder. I have ordered magazines from one of the school fundraising programs, but I won't do that again. It took forever to get the magazines, and I'm sure we didn't get the full year. DH's mom always sends us Readers Digest, and that one I hate, cause I hate all the junk mail that comes every month, she gets sucked into those really bad, and we have to keep cancelling the books, and stuff she buys because she thinks she's going to win. Those really tick me off. And she's really caught up in the Publishers Clearing House stuff. I had to finally write them and tell them if they didn't permanently take her off their mailing list I was going to get a lawyer. I think that stuff has finally stopped. She was sending them at least $200/month and I have no idea what she was buying, but she kept paying the invoices, they'd send a 2nd notice and she'd pay that one too. But we never saw what she was paying for.
